The ship was clearly identified, not only by its unique configuration but by a very large U.S. flag that was flown at the time. The weather was calm and the visibility was excellent. During this unprovoked attack 34 U.S. Navy men were killed and 171 wounded. Nevertheless, to this day the American public does not know why the attack took place and who was involved overall. In my opinion, the United States government and the Israeli government must share responsibility for this cover-up. I cannot accept the claim by the Israelis that this was a case of mistaken identity. I have flown for years in both peace and war on surveillance flights over the ocean, and my opinion is supported by a full career of locating and identifying ships at sea. Based on the way this tragedy was handled both in the United States and in Israel, one must conclude that there is much information that has not been made available to the public. The U.S. Fleet, positioned nearby, received a distress call from the USS Liberty, and one carrier dispatched a squadron to go to the defense of the disabled ship. Before the aircraft reached the Liberty, they received orders from Washington directing their return to their ship. Who issued those orders? So far, no one knows. In the United States all information available to the U.S. government indicating those who participated in controlling this operation from Washington, together with the exact text of orders transmitted to the Mediterranean Fleet, has never been made public. The Israeli government knew that US aircraft carriers had just launched aircraft to come to Liberty's aid and the attack was quickly called off. The Israeli government called the US Embassy and said that they had made a "mistake." A torpedo boat officer asked in English over a bullhorn: "Do you need any help?" The treatment of the USS Liberty survivors by the Pentagon and all American presidents since the massacre of American sailors of USS Liberty, has been a national disgrace. Obama is bigger disgrace in this regard than all his predecessors because he espoused humanitarianism over politics.

The USS Liberty was a old WW II era cargo ship, and looked like thousands of other old WW II cargo ships working the Med and every other sea and ocean on the planet; that's why they used it as an intelligence ship, because it blended in. It was sent into a war zone, without prior notification to the Israelis that an American ship was entering the zone, which is the usual SOP, anywhere. Another freighter, known to have left a foreign port loaded with Palestinian arms and terrorists and bound for the eastern Med a few of days earlier, was suspected to be in the area. And indeed, it was later located in an Egyptian port a day or so later, flying a false flag ... Even your pic of it shows it's just an old rusted out tramp to outward appearances. Terrorists, especially Palestinians, were famous for flying false flags on naval vessels and launching attacks from the sea. Flying an American flag meant nothing, for obvious reasons. Even with that, the Israeli pilots were hesitant to sink it, and argued with their shore commands that something wasn't quite right about the crew; and after 30 minutes broke off the attack before sinking it. There was no 'sneak attack', and it's ridiculous to believe Israel had anything to gain from deliberately attacking a known American navy vessel. Of course this won't matter to the gullible, but they are of no importance. The blame lies entirely with the Navy commanders for not alerting the Israelis. It sucks for the crew, no question, but the Israelis aren't at fault, and that is clear as a bell.
