    from OP's link:

First of all, where has the NRA ever claimed to speak for all gun owners? Where has the NRA even claimed to speak for all NRA members. Since it "often professes" to do so it should be very easy to find an example of that, right OP?

Secondly as to the point about 'following...Newtown," the guns used in Newtown were duly purchased via background check. So that is another red herring from the NYT.

The NRA is one of very few effective pro-liberty orgs still alive and kicking. The ACLU still does some good work when they are not going after trivial pursuits such as banning of crosses on public property. In most regards, I have watched as liberty recedes during my lifetime, but in the one area of gun rights, liberty has expanded, and that is thanks to the NRA.

Cornyn introduced a background-check bill over the summer and the NRA supports it.

The legislation patches holes in the current national background checks system by encouraging states, through the promise of federal funding, to send more information on mental-health records to the national database.

Cornyn’s bill creates a path for people who may be mentally ill to be ordered into treatment by a judge without being involuntarily committed. That provision would boost access to treatment options to strike at some of the root causes of gun-fueled violence, those with a history of mental illness.

Cornyn’s legislation is endorsed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the National Association on Police Organizations.

“We’ve known mental health was a key component to addressing this problem in so many instances,” Cornyn said. “And yet, rather than actually try to make progress in dealing with people who are mentally ill, we’ve had these broader debates about the Second Amendment and about infringing the rights of law-abiding, sane citizens.”

The measure would redirect some existing cash to states that send more information to the national system, which is run by the FBI.
Overall, the bill authorizes about $195 million per year for the federal database — the National Instant Criminal Background Check System — and other related programs, Cornyn said.

“We know because the background check system depends on the voluntary participation and compliance of various states, that there’s a lot of variety in the ways that the states upload their background check information,” the Senate’s No. 2 Republican said. “So what this will do is to make sure that it’ll clarify the scope of the mental health records that the states must share and upload on the background check system.”

The NRA doesn't even speak for its own members. Most of its members want gun control but the NRA talking head leaders fight against it.

This is a very biased, illogical and dishonest article.

Most gun owners wanted background checks, according to a poll. Yet not according to the only poll that matters, when the people elected their representative and/or when voting on a measure to have a background check.

and then the article asserts that it was inaccurate for the NRA to state background checks wouldn't stop criminals "because 2 million criminals were turned away due to Brady backgrond checks". That is completely illogical, that doesn't preclude the possibility that they tried to buy a gun legally, failed, then went out and got one illegally...

Also you can oppose the government having access to how many /what type of guns you own, without being pro gun trafficking. NY times is the definition of bad news.

NRA stands for the constitution and the second most important part of our bill of rights.

I cannot believe that Americans would join the NRA if they reject the leadership and spokesmen.

This whole idea that 87% of NRA members support universal background checks is complete bull(*)(*)(*)(*). I'm an NRA member, I have many friends and relatives that are NRA members, and none of them support any more infringements upon our constitutional right to bear arms. I'd like to know exactly how this bull(*)(*)(*)(*) poll was conducted, specifically how the question was asked. I wouldn't put it past anti-gun groups to ask a small group a question like: "Do you support criminals getting guns?" and when the majority says no, they pass it off as support for universal background checks. They pull (*)(*)(*)(*) like that all the time. If NRA members are so against what the NRA is doing, it's membership would be plummeting.

I love how lying liberals try to disguise their hatred for gun freedom by blaming the NRA and saying they're gun owners. :roflol: it's always good for a laugh. This pretty much sums up what the reality is...

Hell we're all on this board I bet members of a political party and I would also bet 2% agrees with everything the party they are register as stands for.

I think it's a rare thing to agree with everything a large political body stands for.

Of all the members I know the biggest gripe is that they dont fight enough. Repealing the machine gun ban is a big one people support. Banning all these "gun free zones", which are really nothing but soft target victim zones, is another.

so for all the liberals saying the NRA is so evil and against its supporters.....your pretty much full of it. You just don't like the fact that they wont bow down to all the bully tactics of your minions.

Personally I like the JPFO a bit more but I will support the NRA 100% even though they are a bit soft IMO.

Over the last few decades I have come to the belief that its every americans patriotic duty to support the NRA. The work they have done during this administration only confirms that.

This was a terrorist incident with a message and method to execute Christians in soft target zone who were defenseless by law. This administrations answer is to go after legal gun owners rights and continue to victimize peaceful civilians. Seems pretty transparent to me.

It's not a conspiracy, it's just pure bull(*)(*)(*)(*). They're far too stupid to come up with elaborate conspiracies.

Want to register gun owners? Make them prove they are US citizen, no felonies, not nuts, 30 day waiting period? OK, should word for voter ID too.
