    I don't see how thats relevent. OP asked why we culturally value guns in America, not why perhaps we shouldn't.

    You care when you cross that line after dark :) You care when you need to be somewhere and it involves turf ownership.. There are two California's one the day entertains and one the night entertains. I personally don't appreciate having to detour my route to avoid thugs and trouble, then again I only visit that shithole several times a year :)

    Honest question. Out of the 650 people murdered in Chicago in the year 2017 how many of those murders do you believe were conducted via a legally purchased firearm from a licensed FFL dealer?

    anyone who ever tried to rape me would get to find out what it feels like to have a dozen sig sauer 9mm elite v-crown jacketed hollow point rounds in his center body mass.

    for about 15 seconds... about the time it takes for the massive blood loss to shut down his defective little brain.

    Do you have statistics?

    Trouble is that the USA is awash with guns. Even here one of the biggest sources for guns for criminals were those not handed in in 1996. But that does not mean that the problem should be added to by putting more guns out there.

    But crims are by definition lazy. Most of our criminals are unarmed

    The reason they're so popular in the US is because of all the divisiveness in this country which is being fueled by liberalists that are pushing for totalitarianism. Everyday they try to change the laws of the constitution to reflect ONLY their views while silencing the voices of all others. They want the 1st amendment to ONLY apply to them and all others need to keep their mouths shut or they'll send ANTIFA to bully your children when you're not home or attack you on the street. This while trying to remove everyone's right to bear arms.

    All paying attention can plainly see these violent mobs are not a small operation and they're very well funded with a clear objective that's going to lead to a civil war soon if something doesn't happen to stop them soon.

    Since no one on either side of government seems interested in abolishing these ANTIFA mobs, why should anyone give up their only means of protection?

    What if it escalates and they begin showing up with guns? Pull out your 9mm against a mob of about 20 with the same? What will be your family's chances? Or how about they start lobbing maltov cocktails or grenades?

    Anyone thinking this isn't possible wouldn't have believed 10 years ago we'd be where we are today either. You know PRE-OBAMA days?

    I want better background checks and guns out of the hands of nutjobs for sure. And people need to start reporting any neighbor that seems eratic. But allowing the right to own an AR15 has never made more sense than it does today given the division of the country and the obvious outside funding mobs are clearly receiving.

    And that is the main difference between the United States and Australia.

    I recently had a discussion with a woman from the UK who described how the police there are armed with batons only and how they repel home invaders with brooms and throwing things at them.

    That wouldn't work here in the US because in the US our criminals ARE armed. Our law enforcement MUST be armed to deal with our criminals here.

    Last night I was watching a documentary series on prisons. I like watching those series'. It's mostly about the US but one episode showcased prisons in Scotland. There was a stark difference between the criminals in the Scotland prison and the ones in the US. They profiled the "veteran" violent offender in the Scotland prison and he described very intimately about how he would stab someone who upset him. Even the narrator described how "these are hardened murderers whose weapon of choice are knives".

    Meanwhile the episode on US prisons, mainly San Quentin in California described multiple murderers using firearms to kill. The Scottish "murderers" and "hardcases" wouldn't stand a chance in hell as criminals in the US with their knives as the weapon of choice. They would be over powered by our criminals with their semi automatic firearms and our law enforcement would be over powered if they were not allowed to carry firearms here in the US.

    The point is, places are different, vastly different.

    As you said, the US is awash with guns. You are not going to remove them from the US, it is simply impossible based on the amount we have here with roughly half of which being unregistered. Unlike Scotland where their "hardened criminals" walk around with knives, ours walk around with guns. In order to adequately protect your home and property you NEED a gun here because our bad guys have guns here. If we could magically remove all of the guns here then we wouldn't have this problem, but we can't so we have to deal with what is not what we wish it would be.

    As far as do I have any actual statistics as to whether or not the guns used in the majority of Chicago homicides are purchased legally? No I honestly don't. What I do have is real world experience living in a place like that and I've read the gun laws for Illinois. You need a permit to buy a firearm in Chicago. And without any actual statistics I can tell you with 100% certainty that the majority of those using handguns to commit murder in Chicago do not have permits to legally own those firearms. Even without doing the research to see whether or not that is true I would honestly bet my next weeks paycheck on it.

    The Gangster Disciple's of Chicago are not buying their guns legally from the local FFL dealder in downtown Chicago. I 100% guarantee it.

    This is not a Utopian world. On planet Earth, there's a very disproportionate high number of sociopaths running around who are fueled by hateful MEDIA rhetoric killing just because they want to scratch a violent itch.
