Chinese and Japanese have distinct facial differences. Koreans could be said to be somewhere in between, but it is still possible to distinguish between a Japanese and Korean person.

The reason it is difficult for white people to tell them apart is because white people have become accustomed to seeing white faces all the time, they just take it for granted, and can focus instead on the subtle facial differences. When there is a face of a different race, the physical facial appearance traits characteristic of that other race are so overpowering that your natural inclination to focus on the subtle facial differences becomes distracted. This is basically the reason that a simple disguise can be so effective at making people not recognize the person's face, even though computer facial recognition software has no problem seeing through it.

If you had grown up surrounded by Japanese people all your life, it would be much easier to be able to spot a Korean when you saw one.

Why do Japanese look so different from other asians, if genetics has shown most of them originate from China and Vietnam? http://www.kahaku.go.jp/special/past/japanese/ipix/5/5-26.html

Yes, but that does not prove anything. It's more location that causes racial differences.

I mean, all humans were originally black, living in Africa, and only got lighter skin when they moved to other areas. It understandable that people descended from the same ancestry would have different traits depending on location. Especially isolated people like the Japanese who until a couple hundred or so years ago did not even know trade with other countries.
