Why do libertarians seem to like the rich yet dislike the poor?

What the hell are you talking about? It's simply a well known fact that we live under corporatism in this country.

To everyone else, I theorize that he got so defensive with my claim (which is that he defends his boss due to being in love with him) because it's true and he gets offended when anyone makes snob remarks against his lover.

It seems that employees who love being dominated by their employers seem to generally have the same attitude.

It's 'well known' by folk who live in a land of empty minded slogans but it is simply silliness to most of the rest of us.

"In this society, if it weren't for certain benefits (especially social security, workers compensation and medicare/medicaid, none of which I get or know much about personally."

Let me pass on some information so that you will know something about these benefits.

    You list,
    Social Security,
    Workers comp.
    Medicare,
    Medicaid,

First MEDICAID. first because it in no way belongs with the rest of your list. MEDICAID is a govt welfare plan. It is funded by the taxes in the general fund. Those receiving benefits from MEDICAID have not in any way contributed to MEDICAID. They qualify by being poor, not by contributions.
MEDICAID is a Federal program, administered by the states. The state receives money from the Federal Govt to administer MEDICAID, [never enough] but the Feds tell them HOW to administer it. Not a good plan.

    Social Security
All SS BENEFICIARIES, have paid into Social Security all their working lives, through FICA taxes. In fact if they have not paid in a MINIMUM of 10 years, they are NOT eligible to receive SS benefits. 0%, 50%, or 85% of SS benefits are income taxable, depending on the person's income. That the SS trust fund has been exhausted by politicians using the funds for other purposes is not the fault of those receiving benefits.

MEDICARE. Again, a contributory program. To be eligible for Medicare you must have paid into FICA taxes for a minimum of 10 years. [A non-working spouse qualifies on the spouses working life] Once reaching age 65, $100 or more depending on income is deducted from the SS benefit as the monthly premium for MEDICARE insurance coverage. Besides the premium of $1200.00 per year per person, each MEDICARE beneficiary must pay a Doctor deductible each year of $150.00 before MEDICARE covers anything. That deductible goes UP every year. In addition to the deductible, the beneficiary must pay 20% of the doctors approved MEDICARE charges. And there is no maximum limit on those out of pocket expenses per year or lifetime. i.e. NO "stop loss." For Hospital stays the MEDICARE beneficiary must pay a $1200.00 deductible [separate from the $150 doctor deductible] for each benefit period. A new benefit period starts 60 days after one is released from a hospital. So be readmitted to the hospital, even for the same problem 61 days after discharge and you owe another $1200. That deductible also increases on a yearly basis.

Hardly what you would call a government giveaway.

WORKERS COMPENSATION, and I'll add UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.
Both of these benefits are paid BY EMPLOYERS.
Businesses MUST, separately pay into Workers Comp. INSURANCE, and Unemployment INSURANCE. A State unemployment pool AND a Federal unemployment pool. They build up a 'bank' of money in each account.
The premium they pay is PER Employee and goes up with increased claims
For WC, again the premium is per employee and is determined by the job the business does. A legal office might have a low premium per employee while a roofing company has an extremely high premium. And of course, a higher incidence of claims means a higher premium.

The Employer supplies the money, The States and the Feds administer the benefits. Only when the employers money pools are exhausted does tax money become involved. "EXTENDED" unemployment benefits.

It's because libertarians are basically communists except with the opposite ideology. Both groups yearn for social models which have either never existed, have failed, or were abandoned. But remember, these are people who want a gold standard regardless of the economic turmoil it would cause and whose response to the incredible decline in the standard of living that it would also cause would be "so?"
