I've heard on Facebook people collect 'friends' and get 'like's. A political forum is different because I generally see more dislikes and more arguments than likes, which raises the question of why anyone would want to go on a political forum?
The title suggests we talk about reasons anyone might have. You really want to know what the person responding has for motivation.
I just like the discussion, and pitting my ideas against someone else's who believes something totally different. Admittedly it's less fun now days than it used to be. I used to argue with liberals over public policy, based on the fact we have different worldviews. Now, we have totally different view's of objective reality. It's pointless arguing with progressives about boys in girls clothes in girls locker rooms or athletic teams since we can't even agree on what's male and female. So discussions are becoming more pointless, although I've had a few worthwhile discussions lately.
I enjoy debating, find policy interesting, and like learning others perspectives. On a forum I can do so without losing my job, friends or family. I don't see anybody in real life regularly anymore who likes discussing policy as much as I do. Back in college I did. I think I'm right and want to show other people I'm right, but this one you don't get as much satisfaction since everybody else does as well. It's rare you change anybody's mind, and even rarer that they admit you did. I do like getting likes from posters I admire, but I wouldn't call it the primary motive.
I actually believe that the way that the world thinks can be altered through political forum .com in spite of all of our arguing and posturing. I actually do believe in changing the world for the better one person at the time....... one important concept at the time?! https://near-death.com/howard-storm-nde/ Oh... and I do plead guilty to also getting likes by taking a link from political forum .com and copy and pasting that link into Mewe discussion groups.... and Facebook discussion groups... which will help to explain why some of our discussions get so many hits online. I actually learned the word "Malthusian" from Dr. Luggit on a discussion here..... as I researched that word much of the deception that is coming out of Ottawa and Washington became much more easy to understand! http://www.politicalforum.com/index...paign-writings-as-art.534297/#post-1069162895 My 2006, 2008, 2016 and 2004 campaign writings as ART. ? Is the world economy being deliberately dampened, perhaps to save the environment? * Yes 3 vote(s) 75.0% No 0 vote(s) 0.0% Maybe????? 1 vote(s) 25.0% Change Your Vote
The same reason I enjoy listening to conservative talk-radio, to hear how batshit crazy some ideas are. I also like to get the blood flowing. Or maybe it's a sickness related to negative stuff, just like how I enjoy hearing people call into local sports radio after my favorite football team LOSES. I could care less listening if my favorite team wins.
It’s a safe way to air views which may be unpopular and earn me a smack in the teeth if I were to air them IRL.
What a bunch of Huey. Hardly any of the liberals here embrace that, in particular athleticism. Perhaps your decline in self-honesty is the issue.
Debating public policy is interesting. However Trump and alt-reality is a challenge. A real turning point was the 'stolen election' of 2020.
It's not much fun for the folks who are relatively moderate because in addition to having to deal with what you wrote above, they also have to deal with an entire segment of the population who've turned a despicable disgusting moron into their idol, going so far as to invent alternate realities where he won the election or he's draining the swamp.
The US has long been dominated by idealists, recall the years of the war in Vietnam, protesters said 'we are killing people', the idealists said 'we are saving them and the world from communism'. I post here because I'm an empiricist, or a 'realist' as it is now often known. So I'm giving the alternative to the propagandist's idealism. I do also handle ideals, but it is complicated to do that, I guess that's why so many people take one ideal and stick with it 'come hell or high water'.
Being an old phart, I recognize that challenging one's brain is important to keeping sharp. The old saw, "use it or lose it" applies to your brain, too.
I've learned A LOT from my time here. Reading, posting, responding. Of course I have my own political beliefs and opinions, but it has been eye opening (and clarifying to a degree) for me, reading posts from members I respect from the 'other side'. Yes, there's lots of name calling and angry back and forths, but some of the folks on the Right have actually clarified their positions to a point where I can see their view. I may not agree with it, but it does clarify things that made no sense to me previously. I have a few people in my life who clearly listen to respond rather than listening to understand. And I see that a lot here. Those are folks with whom I will rarely engage.
Having argued those issues on this forum, I would have to respectfully disagree that they are a fringe belief amongst the left.
Many posters come here claiming they are moderate and a few discussions usually reveal that they are not. If you are a true moderate it seems unlikely you would spend much time arguing politics on a political forum.
I believe the US govt should have a responsibility for defending America, which it doesn't do, and not galivant around the world starting wars everywhere, claiming to be doing good, which it does instead. That opinion is so rare it makes me an extremist.
So are you saying that I am an idiot to think that Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may have destroyed both the Biden campaign as well as the USA Democratic Part in terms of the 2020 election? Biden only won sixteen counties in the USA..... and yet supposedly got even more votes than Obama???????????????????????????????????????? Are many of Joe Biden's troubles P. M. Justin Trudeau's fault? Yes... I plead guilty....... I attempted to mount a campaign back in 2011 and 2012 to rival Mr. Justin Trudeau for the office of national leader of Canada's Liberal Party........ so....... I suppose that I may perhaps have some animosity........ and yes.... I was partly being kind of sarcastic and funny but...... but..... but...... I was a member of Canada's Liberal Party from 2009 to 2015 and what got released in some rather left wing Liberal Party ridings....... .... was off the scale dangerous.... .for THE USA DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND FOR BIDEN'S BASEMENT CAMPAIGN FOR POTUS!!!!!!??????
I am actually somewhat more politically left....... than P. M. Justin Trudeau on some pretty big issues......... ..... This week at work I was informed that Ms. Carolyn Parrish is far ahead of all other candidates and my favourite guy....... Mr. Peter McCallion is not even second...... he is more like fourth or fifth! I have a gambit in mind for Ms. Carolyn Parrish...... but this is NOT devoid of risk....... Mr. Peter McCallion is the only child of Mayor Hazel McCallion and therefore...... he has absolute legal rights to use her name and / or her image.... in any way that he chooses. I believe that MISSISSAUGA IS THE PERFECT LOCATION TO ATTEMPT A MODERN APPLICATION OF THE 1932 WORGL, AUSTRIA LOCAL MONEY EXPERIMENT THAT WAS SPREAD into the USA by Professor of economics Irving Fisher who..... .presented the results of his experiment to FDR and FDR ENDED UP INITIATING THE NEW DEAL........ significantly because of an experiment in economics that was organized by ordinary residents of over a thousand USA towns and cities???!!!! ..... So... my suggestion is that Ms. Carolyn Parrish meet with Mr. Peter McCallion and discuss how a twenty dollar "Hazel McCallion Dollar Note" with Hazel's name and image on it...... could be used as a PROP of sorts...... that could be used to cause the Greater Toronto Area FILM INDUSTRY..... TO SURGE POSSIBLY EVEN PAST HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!?????? THERE ARE REALITY FILMS BEING PRODUCED IN TORONTO THAT COULD FIND THIS IDEA FAR MORE THAN MERELY INTERESTING!!!!????? http://www.politicalforum.com/index...uga-by-election.617470/page-2#post-1074791574
I think a lot of people, including myself to a degree don’t like to talk politics in person, so they use the forum to vent their views.
This is where I get a lot of my news. All the commenters are really helpful in sifting out the BS and exposing reality.
