Why does drama have to trump historical accuracy?

I was watching the Sons of Liberty on History Channel today, and actually kind of enjoyed it. But all along I suspected it was not historically accurate. And doing a simple google search, I found out it was grotesquely inaccurate, portraying characters in almost the opposite way they should have been portrayed, and just making things up for the sake of drama.

You would think a channel that calls itself the "History Channel" would actually present a historically accurate representation of history, but it doesn't. I've always found real history to be much more compelling than made up history, and you'd think the "History Channel" would know this as well. But I guess they don't.

A simple Googol search is not really that accurate itself. You must be very, very careful as to the reliability of Internet sources. I wouldn't cite the History channel in a paper but they've always been useful to me as a guide to what to look for.

That being said, they are part of the organization that pushes "Honey Boo Boo" as proper fare for, "The LEARNING Channel" so I wouldn't expect too much

Probably because most writers delve in fiction, over-dramatics, and hyper creation of the legend/myth, not the facts. Pretty sad since most of the true story/factual information is better than the made up BS, but never sees the light of day where Hollywood is concerned. It is also highly doubtful that someone who is a stickler for the historically accurate angle, would be accepted by the phony baloney movie business types.

Read the original script for Tombstone and see how close an action director stayed to the original.

Classically the further away we are on a timeline from a historical event, the more we have to rely upon assumption to fill in the gaps. Like another member said, historical facts are hard to come by as a Google search will often return conflicting results... even from reputable sources.

When I watch a documentary I know I am just getting the producers interpretation of past events. Also if you watch five different documentaries on the same subject you will get five different versions of the same story.

Reminds me of that movie, "Lincoln," that had historical inaccuracies.
