Why is rape the only crime where you can't examine what the victim did?

I'd need pretty irrefutable scientific evidence to accept the extremely counter-intuitive idea that theft isn't motivated by greed or rape by lust, but that acts of violence tend to be motivated by a "rush."

How do they know? Even if it were true how would you know it?

    1) I trust what I see with my own two eyes more than statistics. I know that leaves you with nothing but to trust an anonymous poster, which I don't blame you for not.

    2) It is simply the laws of repetition vs chance taken. Anytime the police catch someone, they had gotten away with it several times before. Let's face it, no one becomes a cop because they are brilliant. It is the stated laws that land most criminals in jail. More often than not I wouldn't be surprised if the criminal has a higher IQ than the officers in question. But no matter how good you are at something, an anomaly is going to land you in jail eventually if you persist in your deviance.

I am very uncomfortable with this thread probably because I have both a semi-grown son and a semi-grown daughter.

Someone rapes my daughter via violence or drug induced stupor, and I probably have to kill that scum.

At the same time, if my son comes to me and tells me that some girl is preggo and that she seduced him while he was drinking, I am more prone to kill him too.

I guess I am old school and men(gentlemen) are always in control and always responsible for what they do with women. Only exception I can think of is if the woman drugs the guy without his knowledge.

But if your daughter was raped, and I hope she never is, or even attempted, wouldn't it make you angry as well that the topic is so taboo that you're not even supposed to examine ways you can lessen your chances? It's as if feminists have decided that women are equal (they're not because there's a difference between equity and equality) and that means women can do whatever they want and it's men's fault if something bad happens to them. Discussing how to limit their chances of being raped to these people is the same as saying women are second class citizens, but we don't treat people in other criminal areas as second class citizens if we teach them how to limit their chances of being robbed, assaulted, hit by a car, etc. This taboo only seems to be about rape.

Actually, I think it's the opposite. They portray women as helpless victims of everything that happens around them, while men are always in control. If they truly say women as equal, they wouldn't be so focused on protecting them from various threats, real or perceived.

If you're cunning or lucky, you may never get caught. No one would know and there's no way of telling. Jack the Ripper, for instance, never got caught, at least not for those crimes.

The problem with this is promiscuous premarital sex has become a norm in our society. The "preggo" issue is different all together, but your son having 50 casual encounters and running into a psycho on the 51st who says he rapped her after the fact is a real possibility.
There is actually all kinds of courses on women's self defense, as well as women being taught young how to avoid situations that put them in bad circumstances.
    1) Always go on double dates until you know the guy and don't separate from the other girl.
2)Never park in a dark out of the way location.
3)Try to always have someone you trust walk you to your car.
4)Keep your keys in your hand pointed as a weapon ready to use.

I'm not a chick so can't remember them all, but as a guy with a sister I remember it being taught to her.

There are exceptions to every rule for sure, but it does not mean people shouldn't be weary of rules.

I see your point, but at the same time in this area it's as if they don't want it examined how women can lessen their chances for some reason.

I remember we were talking about this topic at university and one guy mentioned how he hates when he's clubbing the girls who lead you on, tease you and then walk off when you buy them a drink, mission accomplished. He said he could see that some men would take that as permission to basically rape them as they would see that as justification.

Now, he didn't say that he agreed with it, he disagreed with the actions of men who took it to that level, but a number of the women in the class got really angry and said he was blaming the victim and not the criminal.

To me it looked like he was looking at something that does happen and if you do it to a stupid and/or violent guy it can backfire. To him it was advice to think before you do something, to the women in the class it was an attack on them because they should be able to do anything and nothing happen to them, which in a perfect world would be true but we don't live in a perfect world. Of course in a perfect world women at clubs wouldn't tease you to get you to buy them a drink.

I'll say it again though, he was quite specific that he still blamed the guy if he went too far.

Hehe, you obviously don't know me. I warn her all the time about anything and everything which could increase her chances for harm. I research and know statistics for just about any place, time, situation, etc.

I use my disapproval to help her avoid doing things which might make her a target for scum.

I do the same for any travel anywhere. My only mistake so far was when we were almost robbed at gunpoint in a Caribbean island late at night while leaving a yummy restaurant located in a bad part of town. A taxi cab driver saved our butts by screeching down the alley and using his cab to separate us from the thugs.

Anyway, if ever God forbid, my daughter wears a short skirt, high heels, tube top, and gets raped in some seedy part of town at 4am while exiting a party high on extasy, the guy who does it will die an untimely death and probably never be found.

Everyone here I'm sure has women in their life and feels the same. The problem is revenge is after the fact, your daughter will still be not herself for life, and maybe missing a father who is in prison. The key is instilling the values that keep her from ecstasy parties on the seedy side of town.

see, if a woman has a history of false reporting date-rapes for reasons like "she got cheated on and wanted to get back at her s.o." and she's now reporting date rape on another ex-b/f..... then that SHOULD be brought up.

too many times, women claims date-rape, leaving it to a guy to prove his innocence, but he isn't allowed to ask certain things, further tieing his hands

look at duke lacrosse. She had a history of making false claims, yet "how dare anyone question her about it"
