Dude, it was obvious to anyone paying attention to the goings on in Syria. With the exception of Spetznatz the Russian army is a draftee army whose tactical doctrine hasn't really changed much since WWII. It lacks flexibility, and is grossly over dependent on artillery preparation a la WWI and weight of numbers for it's success. It learned nothing from the debacle in Afghanistan and less in Syria it is failing because it is tactically moribund.

Russias overly mechanized army in large sprawling urban environments doesn’t work. Even when pulverized into rubble that rubble creates additional obstacles and hiding spots for infantry, which just leaves the question of how capable is that infantry in taking out mechanized units and thanks to the west, they are very capable of it, making infantry superior to tanks. only an idiot takes a cavalry army into a dense forest to fight and thinks peppering it with fire arrows will somehow make it all better. The Russians are doing the rough equivalent of this. Russia needs massive infantry armies and that is going to be bloody af
