While I agree with you that it's stupid to care what people at the beach think, I wouldn't say shaved or tanned guys are "feminine." It's just a cleaner, less hairier version of masculinity.

 

I never said tanned guys are feminine, but obsessing over your appearance and shaving your body hair is pretty feminine. Women shave their arms, legs, pits etc, to look younger and less like men. Men are highly visual and into young feminine women so that makes sense. Women are generally into older men, and things that are masculine, so copying women's beauty strategies does not make sense, unless you are trying to appeal to men.

 

I'm fairly metrosexual and I dress a lot like a scene kid, and I'm generally only attracted to women. It sucks because most women aren't into my appearance, except for those that are like me. But then again, I don't care about relationships that much. I view them as an activity people engage in to increase their social status among their friends. "Hey look, I got a boyfriend/girlfriend. I'm so coool!"

 

You forget that women are also quite hairy, they shave legs, groin and under their arms (pretty much all women). Are you in favour of this, or against? Does it make them less feminine that they don't look like nature intended?

 

That's why we retained hair there and under arms, this musky smell (not the old sweaty smell however), is a basic human attractant and it still works.

You are however correct with what you say about BJ's, the common attitude I've seen from women over the last 10 years or so, is "we look after ourselves down there and we expect you to also". I've no problem with that, I'm not a fan of walking into the Amazon and fair is fair. Having said that, I do not use many man-products, the absolute minimum in fact. Soap, shampoo, razor and a beard trimmer; job done.

I started shaving my pits last year in the summer, haven't looked back. The ladies have also commented that they prefer this look.

Don't worry about this. Men who are insecure about their own masculinity often play the gay card. They are unable to figure out that being clean, well-groomed, and reading a magazine for conversation material are part of prepping to go out and meeting women. These are the guys who at age 50 have a pot belly and are sitting on a bar stool wherever drinks are the cheapest!

Don't be disturbed, or be afraid. You see even in quiet conversation men don't talk about things like grooming, let alone body sculpting. Women do, and that is why they usually look better kept than guys. In here it is easy for me to discuss this, because I don't have to see you at work tomorrow.

You could use phrases like "Going to the gym." or "Getting a trim" if it makes you more comfortable. The whole point of this thread is things you can do for guys to look better to women. What is disturbing about that? Men have done this for centuries. If you want to call it "gay," I think you are the one with a problem.

I am not excusing my place in society. I certainly feel stuck in the retail job circle, but I know I have plenty of ways out and am working on them, such as going back to school and looking into different career options. Seriously, you need to stop making such rude assumptions about others. Especially for as casual a comment I made to another user. Honestly...

I think image has a great deal to do with self image or one's masculinity. Shaved chests especially, I feel, are becoming a more common expression of this masculinity as our culture grows to accept a more visually stimulating approach to image.
