With Russia freely invading non-NATO countries, what are the chances that Finland will choose to join NATO?

I checked the box to let people change their votes, so if you change your mind based on the evolving world situation, feel free to change your vote.

Good chance....same as Sweden....I've noticed a much bigger presence of Swedish military on Gotland Island....one never knows where filthy Kremlin boots will try to thread.

Sweden already has numerous exercises with Nato and is fully interoperable with Nato...as with Finland. Them joining Nato would be just a formality with a mere pen stroke.

An absolute nightmare for Putler if all 3 ....Finland,Sweden,Ukraine all were admitted to Nato. He would be finished by sundown.

They have been talking about it for decades, but looks like they want to remain neutral, like Switzerland. They did agree to replace the F18s with F35, and still have mandatory military service for all males, so they do take it seriously.

It'll depend on NATO's response in Ukraine. If they do nothing and let Russia steamroll Ukraine? Probably not. But if NATO stands up to Russia? Maybe.

Unfortunately there are. It's called a commitment problem. If you won't fight for another country, why should you fight for your allies?

Because you agreed to do so. Finland does not want to fight for countries like Turkey, so they have not joined NATO.

You might not keep your word, but NATO is a treaty and it taken seriously.

Sweden has a history of neutrality though (kind of like Swiss neutrality, but more low key so no one notices). They will be reluctant to give up this neutrality.

Finland has a history of fighting Russia.

We have no commitment to Ukraine. It's worlds away different from a NATO country.

Sure. So, why didn't US help this "ally" during the Winter War? I get it that it was impossible later when US allied with Soviet Union and Finland was at war against them, but during the Winter War that was not yet the case.

I have no idea. That is an area of history that I am not well informed about.

I'll add it to the queue. But there are a lot of books in that queue so I don't know when I'll get to it.

Stalin to Mannerheim: I can send 10 million men against you
Mannerheim (Premier of Finland): Have them bring their own shovels. We can't bury that many

Hell, we didn't help BRITAIN and FRANCE against the NAZIS for 2 years, and Britain was just about begging us. When the Winter War began there were still lots of people who thought we could just watch while Germany and Russia tore each other apart. Most Americans didn't even know where Finland was
