most of the crap you heard about windows 8 as being bad was totally wrong...really wasnt that much different than windows 7...but i guess if you are a person who believes that if your hard drives crashes then you lose your emails you really dont know much about computers...maybe those people should have stayed with the commodore 64...

I have never, ever claimed to have any expertise with computers. I use either one of four browsers or OpenOffice word processor. Anything beyond that is something I know little about.

My comments about 8 were based on what I've read on the internet about it. No more. No less.

This makes no sense. High definition is 1920x1080. Computers have supported much higher resolutions than that for years.

It appears I made a mistake in writing high "definition" when it should have been high *resolution*. Therein lies the difference.

windows 8 like all the windows before them likes to hide more and more from consumers and try to "predict" what a person really wants to do, even going so far as to undo what they did, I can see how that would be frustrating to those not as technical as we are

personally I am happy with Windows 7, I prefer Linux(android) on my phone, tablet and tivo

There are people, much like me, who find it difficult to master new technology. All these Windows upgrades are designed by 20 year olds for the benefit of 20 year olds and it's bugger the rest.

As long as my laptop works, I'm happy. But practically every day I am bombarded by offers of this and offers of that, upgrades that I don't want and dire warnings that if I don't go with the masses, eventually my system will be a relic of the past and unusable.

I'm fed up with it. I'm 74 and satisfied with what I have. Why can't they leave me alone?

Actually there is no Windows 9... Windows 10 is the next release.

And windows has no affect on how much a PC costs.

You are right on both counts. Just about any decent modern-day computer can load and run Operating Systems, from XP to Windows 8.1 right now.

Windows 8 was puzzling to many people because it was a navigational nightmare, but MS fixed it with the release of Windows 8.1. I've heard some people say that there is very little difference between 8 and 8.1, but to that I reply there must be quite a difference because 8.1 has a different kernel than 8.... Anyone with Win8 can download Win 8.1 from the "Microsoft Store" tile link for FREE. And they'd better do so ASAP because the only way you can get Windows Updates for the Windows 8 platform is if you HAVE loaded and installed Windows 8.1!

Windows 10 is probably going to offer a lot more little "conveniences", and cloud-based this and that, but the thing to keep an eye out for is when (not if) MS starts going to a "subscription-based" methodology for programs and applications. When they do, you won't just be able to go and buy a program and own it permanently. You'll be able to use it on a subscription-basis, and when the subscription period runs out, you'll have to pay more to have the subscription renewed.

Don't worry too much about it now. Redmond has already announced they'll be supporting Windows 7 until the year 2020, and that'll give everyone a long time to figure out what they want to do. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are both excellent operating systems, but only Windows 8 (and 8.1) has DX12, which is (or will be) important to gamers.... I'm running a GTX 970, and it's a really nice video card, but the advantage of a 4GB frame-buffer isn't something I can see quite yet.

Windows 8 is bad, in terms of user interface on mouse/keyboard conventional computers. It is different than Windows 7. Using Windows 7 had few changes from XP (I never ran Vista), but Windows 8 is pretty strange. I can't stand it.

    Not really.

I'm fairly technical, and I can't stand Windows 8, at least on conventional computers. I have heard that it's pretty good on tablets/touch screens. It isn't with mice and keyboards.

I don't like that it hides more and more of the inner workings--it's hard to find stuff in Windows 8 for an experienced XP/7 user, anyway.

I have several computers, I run Windows 7 except for one which still has XP. The only difference I see is that W7 added user interfaces that require more keystrokes/mouse clicks in an attempt (I guess) to make it more 'user friendly' than XP. (forget Vista) Is there an advantage to upgrading to Win 8?

XP was my jam as a windows user, then Vista was such a horrible piece of crap that I switched to Macs for a couple of years. Got sick of Apples practices and general attitude that emulated 90s Microsoft more then the original Jobs Vision and switched to 7.

Now I run 7 on my main PC with Ubuntu 14 on my 2 servers, and Kali Linux on a VM (virtual machines fyi) for my security learning practices.

I just a few weeks ago got a new computer with Winders 8 on it. Came from one with Winders 7. I don't know if it's changes MS made with 8.1 or if it's software that Lenovo loaded on the system, but I work from a "conventional" desktop and have a "conventional" start menu, so I'm not that uncomfortable at all. A few things are in different places (like the Control Panel), but once I found them, I know where they are, so NBD. OTOH, I am a techno-nerd.
