No one should have their right to access to the means of effective self defense restricted outside of due process of the law Technically, women are not covered by the second amendment. It refers to the right of the militia. The militia is defined in US Code as able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 45, discluding many adults from any right to access or 'bear' arms. Realistically, no politician would ever attempt to enforce this definition on women, the elderly or the physically disabled- as such would rightfully be immediate political suicide. It would be nice if we could change the definition to be more inclusive, but there is no danger it will be enforced literally which means its not a can of worms worth bothering.

Women almost never commit crime with firearms. It would make no more sense to restrict their access while men commit the vast majority of firearm related crime than it would to restrict rifles while the vast majority of firearm related crime involves pistols. Neither effectively promotes public safety.

Thats a difference in the letter of the law and its application to society. OIOW, it means that restricting able bodied men 18 to 45 from access to firearms is unlawful, and restricting others is illegal.
