Would you care to inform us of which "white Christian" suburbs you so fear then?

Ah yes of course - the immigrant crime ploy. Vancouver, which is #3 on the list of world's most livable cities has an immigrant population of 38% (2001 census), the highest proportion of immigrants in Canada.

And we have a lot of Muslims here - more than 90,000.

And yes Don we have immigrants of African origin and citizens of descended from African ancestors. Thought I'd mention that as you feel only blacks commit crimes.

    Native Australians?

    Who do you mean, Aborigines?

There are no European "Native Australians" we are all "boat people".

About half the population have at least one parent who was born overseas.

We try and make the multicultural thing work, and it mostly does.

Each new group of migrants have been demonised in turn, but after the second generation has been born and educated here they fit right in.

For the record the list of demons in roughly chronological order, is as follows, be aware that all of them have been tarred with exactly the same brush ie "They are natural criminals and gangsters who will make trouble and never fit in":

The Chinese gold miners around 1860 - Our last Mayor of Melbourne, John Ho, is descended from this group.

The Irish 1800 - 1900 - "They take orders from the Pope."

    The Italians 1945 - 1955 - "Natural Mafia criminals".

    The Greeks 1955 - 1965 - " Natural criminals and welfare cheats"

Croations and Serbs - "Bring their ethnic rivalries to Australia"

Lebanese part One 1965- 1975 - "Natural criminals and drug dealers - Christian division"

Lebanese part Two 1975 - 1985 - "Natural criminals and drug dealers - Muslim division"

Vietnamese 1970 - 1980 - "Natural criminals, drug dealers and brothel owners"

Romanians and other Eastern Europeans 1990 - 2000 - "members of overseas organised crime syndicates"

Iraqis, Iranians and Pakistanis 2000 - 2011 - "Criminal welfare cheats and sharia law advocates"

Somalis 2005 - ongoing - "lawless machete wielding criminals"

The actual reality is that each of these immigrant groups actually have lower crime rates than the rest of the Australian population, but that does not stop the media talking up a good scare story.

My case is typical, Dad was born in Germany, Mom is American, my neighbours are from Greece, almost all my friends have similar "mongrel" backgrounds - it gives us hybrid vigour.

Today I'm lunching at an unbelievably good Vietnamese restaurant "Thien An" in a run down drug infested but seriously stylishly "edgy"suburb that has been taken over by Africans and Indians.

I don't feel that way at all. Flash mob/robs seem to be a black American specific crime though.

At What percentage of the population?

He didn't mention Redbacks. Particularly devilish spiders who hide under toilet seat to bite you when you're most exposed. They even write songs about them!

The Economist has a thing for Australia, a while back they said that Australia is now what California was the 1950's-1960's: a place of endless opportunity.

Australia's promise: The Next Golden State: With a bit of self-belief, Australia could become a model nation

Click the link in the quote above, it's the "special report".

Also, if I -- as a European from a very rich country -- would ever migrate, I would try to get in:

    1° Australia
    2° South Africa/Namibia
    3° Brazil
    4° Argentine
    5° Chile
    6° Uruguay
    7° Canada
8° Congo (for family reasons, but the country has such big problems I'd rather stay away)

I hope that people in Vancouver don't riot now that they've lost top spot.

I wonder though, Australia is nice and all -- but it's on the other side of the planet.

The poster Leo2 described it as: the tyranny of distance (I know he didn't invented the concept or something since it is used in a lot of books and all, but he's the only one using the term around the forum).

Same for Canada and the USA.

I'm way happy to settle for Antwerp, Belgium -- the craddle of human civilization!

Depite it's rather small population (+/- 500.000), it truly is a micro-cosmos.

A friend and his girlfriend are seriously considering moving to Antwerp permanently. Having done some basic research myself I don't blame them. Looks like a great place to live.

A great place for a Bolleke or two. It's the centre of Belgian beer drinking. Except for Bruge. Or maybe Ghent, or Mechelen, or even Brussels. Namur is good too...

Oh my goodness! You know what "een bolleke" is?! :date:

Ever heard of "Het Bollekesfeest"?! It's held every year in the greater festivity of "Antwerpen Proeft" (= "Antwerp Tastes") in the bigger picture of "de Zomer Van Antwerpen" (= "Summer of Antwerp") that lasts for 3 months every year.

Some pics of "het Bollekesfeest" -- this year around 120.000 people attended!

My friend I never said "I fear" any suburb.

BUT if I was to warn people of where "Not to go" and to most who do not know how to deal with people who have "usually rightfully" grievances against the system.

    Not in any particular order.

    Bidwell, Claymore, Green Valley, Waterloo

and I have lived in or near all of them

If you look past the anger and despair you see genuine pain and hurt. I know it's hard to find but it is there.

I KNOW this world, I LIVE in their world, I FEEL with them.

So until your ready to get off your A@# and do something then your best not saying anything.

No Taipans, Box Jellies, Salties, Blue Ring Octapus and funnel webs in Melbourne. Redbacks yes.

Most of these creatures are tropical or semi tropical,, and Melbourne is definitely not. Funnel Webs are only found within a couple of hundred kilometres around Sydney.

Melbourne is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Australia. I think Melbourne has the largest population of Indians in Australia.

Another interesting statistic, Melbourne has the largest population of Greeks in the world outside of Athens. Walk through the Greek sector of Melbourne and check out the cafes and resturants.. Fabulous food.

Cool, I was expecting a larger diversity of cultures. Sounds like a lot of Asians go there almost 3.1% of the population. Are the Newzelanders Maori people or one from England? I remember their were a lot of hot Greek women when I was in Brisbaine, as well as neighborhoods of Aboriginal people. I do remember one thing; The Austrailian men and Candian men like to get full on drunk when they go to clubs. There seems to be a fight every night of the week. Nevertheless, the Austrailian beer/ale is some of the best in the world.

In the USA most of the Chinese are on the West Coast mainly in the Los Angels area over 23% of the population, but they are in about every state that will allow them to set up China Towns. Texas has a large Vietnam population but not anywere near 3% of the population. And Michigan is the place for Middle East people; huge populations of isrealies and muslims, almost 1/3rd the population, with the other third being black and the rest white.

In some US states in the South West, Texas, and Florida, the Latin communities make up over 36% of the population. And there are over 10% Latinos in each of the US Sothern States working agriculture and food factories. They have become the fastest growing culture in the USA. Hence the fear and hatered toward them by other cultures.

In the USA the attack of the Trade Center 9/11 was a good thing for the Latinos. Now they can point to the Middle East people and say "it's your turn".
