Of course I would. Millions of Americans gave their lives for YOUR country in the past....you're welcome!
Yet every democratic government is reluctant to face the fact. Reservists and citizen-soldiers stand ready, in every free nation, to stand to the colors and die in holocaust, the big war. Reservists and citizen-soldiers remain utterly reluctant to stand and die in anything less. None want to serve on the far frontiers, or to maintain lonely, dangerous vigils on the periphery of Asia. There has been every indication that mass call-ups for cold war moves may result in mass disaffection. ― T.R. Fehrenbach, This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War
A lot of users on this forum signed the dotted line to die for this country. - - - Updated - - - "That's a racist question"
I voluntarily served in the Army in the 70s, so yes, without hesitation. I live near the coast in the Pacific Northwest in the hopes that the North Koreans will try it.
Of course!! I am from Pennsylvania and currently live in Nevada but if foreign troops moved up from the south and invaded Texas I would do my part. As a woman with no fighting experience (though I can shoot) I'd vprobably not be on the front lines but if people were needed to support the troops from just behind the lines (medical, cooking, supply) then I'd be there. I'd want to be there. I know my dad and my two uncles would be right up in the front. How could I not be there ready to support them in whatever way I was capable? What kind of daughter, friend, republican, woman and American would I be if I didn't support my country when needed? And yes I'd be there in Alaska too if the Russians rolled into it.
People would still grab territory and claim it as their own. The strongest would grab the best territory. Then others would eventually get tired of their crummy territory and go to war with the ones controlling the best territory.
I expect that here in the USA that most of the young ones wouldn't. They expect all the benefits without any sacrifice. There is in my opinion quite a different mindset between the WWII generation, my father and today. Myself, I served 20 years in the army which included Vietnam and Laos. Time on the East German Border guarding that against a communist invasion through the Fulda Gap. So I think that answers your question as far as I am concerned. Been there and done that.
Not if every nation was really, really, really small. How have countries like Monaco, Lichtenstein, San Marino and Andorra survived so long without war? Despite them all being surrounded by big and powerful nations, no one has invaded them. Smaller nations are dependent on cooperation so going to war makes no sense for them. Also, a small population is useless in war. The smaller the nations, the better for the world.
Absolutely, especially if we were attacked. I am old now but can still shoot well. I volunteered for the AF during Vietnam and my daughter volunteered as a Marine during Afghanistan. We feel it is our duty but we don't fight for our government but fight for the soldier next to you.
Thats why I still believe we would be better off had the States remained more independent and that the federal government should have far less power
Should have posted the heading the same way with fight as opposed to die. I did my time in the US Army---but didn't expect to die.
I would die for the Constitution, & the principles of American Liberty. But i would not give my life for the nation building BS & use of military to secure corporate & crony interests, driven by corrupt politicians. Nor would i die or serve under a corrupt regime, but would protest or band with other patriots to defend the constitution from ALL enemies, foreign or domestic.
Unfortunately, that is not the reality of the last few centuries. Nations have gotten larger, in an attempt to over match any opposition. Nobody worries about the very tiny, city states, but the big ones, with lots of resources, are easy pickings for an aggressive despot with a big army.
Just my point. If the world consisted of 2000 Lichtenstein's we'd have no wars. Only big nations do evil stuff.
you would need a 'big nation' to enforce this dissolution into smaller states. That isn't going to happen, as nations will expand their territory to expand their power, as they have done for all of human history. Oh, and little nations do evil stuff, too.. just that nobody hears about it, & it only affects the smaller nation.
Just because those states are part of the US, doesn't make them Americans. Since your location is listed as Oakland, good luck learning Chinese.
Not by much, the modern concept only goes back to around 1800. There were governmental entities before that and many resembled modern nations to a greater or lesser degree but real nation-states as they exist in the modern world are a fairly new thing. The USA and France were among the first.
This. I am a very strong believer that your duty as a soldier is not to die for your country but to make the other poor bastard die for his.
Up until the American Civil War the same sort of regional loyalty as in Europe existed here. I don't know if that ended immediately with the ACW but I do know that most Americans are much more loyal to the idea of being American rather than to their individual state in the present. The best example of this is the well known fact that Robert E. Lee was offered command of the US Army at the beginning of the ACW but resigned and took up command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia because he was simply incapable of fighting against his home state. This was not regarded as unusual at the time but would be downright startling if anyone did so today
I would contribute myself for such a noble deed of defending myself, my family, and all my relatives and neighbors, eventually defending the country and it's government. We all are going to die anyway, so it is much better to make life useful.
