When the Powerball was 3/4 billion a guy on TV said if he won he would start up a couple of construction companies with the money. Would 3/4 billion be enuf for you or would you still want to try to make more $

That's not like winning a couple of million. With that much money it would be a full time job just to manage it.

Uncle Ferd says it be `nuff fer him...

... the only workin' he'd do...

... is workin' on hangin' up a hammock...

... where he could lay in...

... an' sip on apple cider...

... whilst he watched DVD's of his favorite movies.

    hahahahaha

If I won 3/4 of a billion dollars I would proceed to do absolutely nothing that involves me waking up in the morning under anything but my own terms for the rest of my life.

I've thought about it before, I always say such things and then I realize when I go on vacation I tend to get bored after about 3 days simply because I'm so used to working so much. But with that amount of money I would find something to do.

I don't even need that much money, to me my definition of rich is simply not having to work anymore. I make decent money, middle class, and if I could proceed to make the same money now for the rest of my life without having to work anymore then to me that would be rich. Hell I'd take a $20,000 a year pay cut if it meant I didn't have to work anymore. I'm not a very materialistic guy I never have been. I went from barely scraping by on minimum wage to middle class with enough money to buy virtually whatever I want within reason and I barely changed my lifestyle. Only real difference is now I live in a house instead of a cheap apartment but I still have the same old furniture from before and I still drive the same 15 year old truck. Not because I can't afford anything else but simply because the truck still works and I have no real reason to buy another one. Thats just how I am.

I just hate working lol. I wouldn't need anywhere near 3/4 a billion bucks to retire right now. I'd retire tomorrow if somebody gave me $1 million. People keep saying that you can't survive on that little money forever, um....yeah you can just don't go try to live la vida loca. I'd buy a normal small house, keep the same stuff I have now, invest the rest, and never slap an alarm clock again unless I want to wake up early to go fishing on my small little boat.

So...to answer your question, the answer for me is hell no. I despise work, I'm not a lazy worker by any means I'm actually the most decorated person at my job with the awards promotions to prove it. I just hate working with a passion. I hate the stress of it, the worrying about it on my days off, the inadequate leadership, the varying personalities, etc. My definition of rich is having my biggest worry in life being the fact that I didn't catch any fish that day on my little boat.

One can only dream....I know I'll never hit the lottery, statistics say it's virtually impossible for "me" to ever win that much money, so instead I simply save massive amounts of my own money so that I can do what I've been talking about WAY before the widely accepted retirement age of 65. Screw that, I'll be damned if I work that long lol.

I'd probably set up some sort of Foundation that gave money to worthy causes. I'd work at that ... some.

Yes....I would still work. Naturally with that type of money, I don't see how I wouldn't make even more money. [IMG]

Nope, I'd quit tomorrow and give my body a rest. There's plenty of work to do around the property without worrying about earning a paycheck. Might do some volunteer work if I get bored. It would be nice to have the money and time to help others in need instead of slaving away for the govt to tax me to help themselves.

Send all your tickets to me. I'll make sure those dollars are appreciated. ;) lol

It's unlikely I would ever win, as I play the odds on those things and therefore do not usually play...same with gambling.

That said, if I ever came into such a nice sum I would probably sequester a third of it for my old age, hiring someone trustworthy to invest it for me.

The next third, I might use to improve my lifestyle. To me, that means some acreage somewhere nice, with a safe, comfy, reliable home, with access to swimming and a few toys like a decent car that can be driven on back roads and a boat. I would reserve enough to pay taxes and maintenance on all of that.

The last third I might invest in a small business to provide jobs for a few people. It might be in someone else's company that is based on a good idea. Hopefully that would provide me with a bit of ongoing income and a continued sense of social responsibility and usefulness.

If my investments made more than I needed, I would consider donating to a few charities I respect, especially the Salvation Army, and maybe spend a bit on political action.

I would still work. I'd just be working for myself with no debt of any kind, free to produce as little or as much as I feel comfortable with.

Continuing "work" as I define it today would not happen. I would instead (In order):

    1) Build my ideal environment.

    2) Eliminate ALL outstanding debt for members of my family as long as they agreed to never accept debt, voluntarily, moving forward.

    3) Set up retirement accounts for the same and college funds for each child. Legacy and reasonable future.

My "work" would then be creating the businesses that I currently do not have the funds to create and perhaps a move into politics. Both of these "occupations" would be in the pursuit of two goals; To create jobs in America, and help keep government out of the business of killing both.

Or, more broadly stated; Work hard in leaving this world better than I found it.

I would definitely start companies that would employ hard working Americans and pay them extremely well.

I'd drop out of school, travel round the world for 2 years and then bribe a university to let me in despite having no qualifications.

Well, when your old, your lucky to sleep till 6 am. Try to get some sleep in when your young. I'm thrilled if I can get 6 hours in. For me 3-4 hours is not uncommon. If you can get some decent sleep that is worth a lot of $ in itself.

Hell, in the old days (1970's) I would just sit in on any class I wanted to. But that was when Cal State L.A. was $63 a trimester and L.A.C.C. was $6.50 a semester. I don't know what they would say now if I walked in and asked if I could just sit in. But we also had some somewhat real proffs back then. What do they have now teaching the class...an Indian graduate student?

Yes, I'd so the same, but not work at it. I'd just fund it. I'd give grants to all the poor starving photogs and artists.

GD...if the property is run down you would sell it unless you are happy with it as-is. It is hard enuf work spending that kind of money without having to work on a property.

For me I would like to be able to waste $ and fly first class instead of being packed like sushi on a plane. it would also be nice to be able to fly in the high season instead of only taking trips in the cold season cause the high season tickets are unaffordable.

Hell even now I'm lucky if I sleep until 6am lol. I'm not "old" per say (not trying to say that in a negative way) but I'm not young either. I'm in the middle. But due to the nature of my job I've had to wake up before the sun rises for the better part of the last decade so I'm conditioned to waking up early now and conditioned to function on little sleep.

I hate it because I'm one of those people that if I wake up then I'm up for good no matter how much or little sleep I've received the night prior. That is why I beg people to not EVER, and I mean EVER call me in the middle of the night unless it is a DIRE emergency. If I wake up at 2am for a phone call then that's it, I'm headed downstairs to cook breakfast.

That's what happened this morning actually lol. Had to get up at around 3am for work but then the weather was bad so we pushed work back a few hours. Sucks for me, I'm up, so now I had the luxury of waiting around for hours until it was time to head to work. Not much is on TV at 3am....Pretty boring...

Oh how I miss the glory days of my youth. I loved being able to sleep until noon as a teen. Now I'm happy if I'm able to sleep until the sun actually comes up lol

I've known a lot of folks who worked 3rd shift for years who absolutely could not change that sleep routine when they retired. They continued to sleep during the day and get up at night.

That's sort of how I am which is bad because I work varying shifts. Sometimes I work nights, sometimes I work days, and sometimes I work midday shifts. But regardless of the shift I'm on I still pretty much go to sleep and wake up around the same time (unless Im working nights of course then I am at work).

So sometimes I'll work from like 5pm until 1 or 2am or so but then I'll go home then go to sleep and boom I'm up again at 7am. So now I have the entire day to kill before work. I hate that. The entire purpose of the late shift is to sleep during the day but I simply cannot do it. Regardless of what time I go to sleep I am up between 6 and 7am. On occasion I MAY sleep until around 8 if Im lucky but that's the latest I've gotten up in a very long time.

If I were rich then I doubt anything would change and I doubt things will change when I retire. I always talk about hating alarm clocks but the reality is that I almost NEVER hear my alarm clock. 99% of the time I am up long before my alarm clock goes off I simply keep one as a backup just in case I somehow manage to sleep past sunrise. I can't remember the last time I actually smacked my alarm clock lol. My internal alarm clock is the one I wish I could shut off.

My sister is like that. Her work schedule has gotten erratic. She went in at 2 every day for years and now one day it is 4 a.m. which may be followed by 2pm followed by 10 am followed by 5 am followed by 6pm. She just gets at least 8 hours between shifts and that is it. Not really her employer's fault so much as her coworkers. There are a lot of people who abuse FMLA, last minute call-ins, no-shows, etc that create gaps that have to be filled and they rely on her to be one of them because she can do a bunch of different jobs and not everyone is trained to operate as much equipment as she is. Her pay is weird too. She gets her guaranteed base pay for her regular job, but then different machines have different pay rates. They have to log onto equipment with their ID card and then their pay is based on the pay for that piece of equipment while they are logged onto it.
