And I would make the opposite case. Like cars, we're going nowhere until the Feds start cleaning up the mess.
Business often will do better if we support them during a closure and let them reopen after the case count comes down. British Columbia never had a lockdown, but it did temporarily shut down businesses likely to spread the virus. Only 17 COVID-19 hospital patients in the entire province.
I don't support trump or anyone else. Only reason I'm responding is because I recognize your feelings. I've thought the exact same way about how the vast majority of people are way too risky with their cars both as individuals and as a whole society. And the majority of peoples carefree attitude toward it enrages me. I'm recognizing that same rage in posters, anchors, pundits toward Covid responses .
Cutting the cases down is useless, as Australia has found out. https://www.bing.com/search?q=Coronavirus+trend+in+Australia&tf=U2VydmljZT1HZW5lcmljQW5zd2VycyBTY2VuYXJpbz1Db3JvbmFWaXJ1c01MIFBvc2l0aW9uPVRPUCBSYW5raW5nRGF0YT1UcnVlIEZvcmNlUGxhY2U9VHJ1ZSBQYWlycz1zY246Q29yb25hVmlydXNNTDtjb3VudHJ5Q29kZTpBVVM7aW50ZW50OkNoZWNrQ29yb25hVHJlbmQ7YWJvdmVuZXdzOlRydWU7IHw=&hs=ZCE36oFZaIhlHYBRhNFgw+v80ycrhcHZBtmXSm5pHpM=&FORM=COVIDR
There you go. A trillion here. A trillion there. Pretty soon the dollar will be on the way to being worthless. Except for two cities, British Columbia is wilderness. We haven't shut down businesses around here either and we are just fine as well. No big cities around here. Apples and oranges.
It turns out that actually isn't all that true. After all the bitching about this trillion or that trillion (Obamacare) it turns out that it takes MANY trillions to have the effect you're talking about MANY MANY
Sure lockdowns work. They artificially lower the percentage required for herd immunity. And they stop working when you end them.
Especially when you live in a tiny country, with a small population, in the middle of the ocean, and have a history of not allowing many migrants enter your country. "Lockdown." Easy Peasy! New Zealanders entire existence before Covid could practically be called "lockdown". lol
There are some club owners who would operate as usual and spread the virus. We're crazy if we let them do as they please. No, it shows people are pulling back (I gave you a graph of actual spending), and unless we get them spending more, the economy is going to roll over, feet up. The government-mandated shutdowns that hold down the virus are the least destructive.
A sparesly populated island nation that quarantines people from outside for two weeks, is that practical for the US?
Whataboutism. The smart approach is to limit production of goods and services likely to spread the virus while we develop vaccines, cures, and treatments.
Contrary to your characterization, New Zealand has a largely urban society. About half of New Zealand lives in seven major population areas. We could do as well as Australia or Canada.
You don't know much about economics. You don't know much about BC, either. The Lower Mainland has a number of large cities and two-thirds of their population. No big cities? Apples and oranges compared to BC. You're way too quick to make excuses for this country. Australia has 133 deaths, 25m people, and these cities... Trump screwed up and then undermined the states trying to get control of the virus by encouraging his goons to violate social distancing.
New Zealand has five million people, so it isn't "sparsely populated." Anyway, the answer is "yes." We only have two borders and Canada shut its border with us first.
Maybe. I think that many small business owners will lose their lifelong dream over this. Families will be crushed. And what happened to them won't be the result of nature or chance; it will be because the government ordered them to. That can evoke a more bitter response than the families crushed by Covid. Also I'm not sure what could happen economically as a result of continued shutdown. Imo our government, whether Biden or Trump is in charge, could very easily screw this up. I don't want to be standing in a line with millions of others in 2 years, just to get a loaf of bread. I don't rule that out as a possibility which is why I take messing with the economy as seriously as Covid.
I'm already seeing shuttered businesses with "For Lease" signs posted. If the economy gets crushed severely, people will steal/rob/burglarize or commit suicide. Politically, people trade freedom for false promises of security, and demand a Socialist/Marxist/Authoritarian government solution.
It has become so crazy that the gal who cuts my hair, working all day in the salon wearing a mask, has now developed some type of acne where the mask contacts her skin. The small massage place where I used to go had to close up shop.
