Good Scotch, good Champagne, good rye, good bourbon, good gin - it's hard to pick between those but to me, one form of alcohol stands above all others. Rum. High quality aged rum. That slightly sweet, molassesy goodness is unsurpassed in my mind. Call me unmanly because unlike other spirits it has residual sugar in it, but that makes it the most pleasant spirit to drink straight, and that is what I do. It's the closest I can usually get to being in the Caribbean so I'll take it. Sidenote: Micro Brewed Beer > All Mass-Production Beer. Period. You won't find a single bottle of mass produced beer in my fridge, because it's blatantly inferior.
Alcohol? UGH! Don't drink...... except whiskey. Lol......and the only time I drink that is a shot of it w/honey & lemon in it to kill my cold. Best cold medicine there is.... it does work.
Nice thread. usually don't post here because casual chat is what my new GF does to me 24/7. Maybe its the age spread, Ii am nearly 11 years older than her, anyway, Steph's favorite drink is Mikes hard cranberry lemonade. Awful stuff that, too sweet, tastes like drinking red cotton candy. I don't party or drink after I got saved and become an ordained Rev. But I still to drink when Stephi and I go out to eat or to friends etc. I drink rum and coke. Or Mescal tequila or moonshine. On hot days Bacardi crushed ice and coke. Favorite beer is the Greatest man in the worlds choice XX the Mexican beer, sometimes Samuel Adams, which is a real good, hops heavy grog. *(used to down 2 12 packs of tall Budweiser's a day, min) ~ Yikes .... reva
One Tequila Two Tequila Three Tequila Floor That and Bushmills, keep the Mexicans and the Irish from ruling the world.
I too feel that rum is the king of spirits. A good dark or spiced rum cannot be beat, especially if you make it yourself. However, I mostly drink homebrew beer. Mostly because I have hundreds of bottles of the stuff lying around.
As I said earlier I have pretty much given up on drinking for effect. Now drink alone and not with anybody else. I have to say don't worry rum is not unmanly it makes us Capt of our own ship 151 Bacardi will second me on that! I can not drink rum without a mixer, but that's me. Home brew..I have yet to taste a good product. Usually 'my want to be' brewer buds put out a product that tastes like malt paste with grain alcohol mixed in. Micro? I have experienced greatness but I would just as happy cracking open a bud or even an ice cold Bush! Yeah I am crude rude and unrefined as Gerorge said. said~ Capt Morgan aka reva ...
Everyone's taste is different - mine tells me Budweiser is really a pretty poor beer. There are plenty of good beers out there - Stella Artois, Sierra Nevada, Hoegaarden, etc, but homebrewing produces a really nice alternative if you have a bit of skill. I can't bring myself to buy beer anymore. I purchase the odd 6 pack or single here or there, but homebrew comprises the bulk of my drinking. With spirits you have to compete with 10-20 year maturation periods. Oak chips also provide an inferior taste in my opinion. That doesn't make the finished product inherently inferior, especially since you're pushing around $5/L. You can get really creative with spiced rum - or even grow your own ingredients for a personal touch.

So yeah. Advantages and disadvantages.
Totally disagree. Not because both my brothers love Rum but because they don't drink their rum neat. They put it in glasses with ice cubes and coke or diet coke.Rum is made from SugarCane. Therefore it is sugar based ... big time. That it what causes hangovers.Too much sugar based alcohol which causes higher degree of hangovers. However Papa Hemingway loved his Daiquiri. They say that Vodka is the most easily absorbed of all alcohol. Therefore it should give one an alcohol buzz the quickest. For certain folk stuff like scotch takes a longer time to break down and produce euphoria. It took me the longest time to learn how to drink vodka ... neat. It was a struggle. However I took up Cognac rather quickly.
I really wanted to like wine, but I like dark beers and whiskey better. I also like sake, it's a rice based drink from Japan.
I don't ever drink enough to get a hangover, so to me that concern is irrelevent. Vodka simply doesn't have enough of a flavour for me. It's simply a way of adding alcohol to other things which is why every girly cocktail in existence has vodka in it. Cognac is over-hyped. Like Champagne, Cognac is simply Brandy made according to specific guidelines based on the way they made brandy in Cognac. It doesn't mean it's good, I've had many brandies that are better than Cognac brandy. There are some truly horrible Cognacs to be honest.
There's plenty of craft beer that is clear and malty, you just have to look. Admittedly a lot of craft beers are IPAs, porters and darker ales in reaction to the lack of hoppy flavour in mass produced beer, but it's perfectly possible to find craft light ales, lagers and pilsners. Guaranteed you'll find them superior to your big brand representations of those varieties of beer. My personal favourite light beers are Steamwhistle Pilsner (more hoppy than a typical pilsner, admittedly); the Mill St. Brewery's "Stock" (ie most produced) Ale (unlike most light ales, has a citrusy Pacific Coast hop note to it, but is mostly malty); and the Flying Monkey's (yes, that is their name; their case designs look like the artist was on acid) Anti-Gravity Lager - virtually no hops, but the maltiest malt you've ever tasted. All 3 right in Toronto. Good thing I live in Ontario.
I hate to say this but, I like most all forms of alcoholic beverages from standard staples such as Budweiser, Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker and cheap CA wines to the more exotic micro-brews, single malt scotch and expensive blended whiskeys (Bourbon), etc. Vodka is my least favorite but I have acquired a taste for good Gin especially when making a Martini. (Sorry James Bond) I don't normally get drunk but that could be good or bad I guess...(not getting drunk could mean you have developed a tolerance).
Good whiskey (that includes scotch - I can't tell you how frustrating it is when I have to answer questions like "scotch or whiskey"), good rum, or a cold light beer. I don't like most mixed drinks, but Captain Morgan makes a great Long Island Iced Tea. 750mL for like ten bucks.
Ever tried Eight Bells rum? I'd highly recommend it if you can get it. It's a great rum, small batch, and it's local - at least for me. It's made about fifteen to twenty minutes from my home town.
It was an IPA that got me sick one night. It made me *queasy and dizzy.I had to stop eating my dinner { I was halfway thru the meal }.That had never happened before. I thought it might have been the food. The smoked salmon.Maybe it didn't go with the yeasty craft IPA. It was an expensive IPA from a highly rated Micro-brewery in Michigan. I kept thinking that that Brewery had purposedly added something to the beer to make people sick. After all Michigan is home to a lot of Muslims. All it would take is one disgruntled Muslim employee working at the Brewery. I took the entire 6-pack sans the one beer back to my Liquor store and explained what happened. That I had never, ever got sick from just one bottle of beer and that I knew beer { having been a home brewer for 5 years }.I was going to think about suing that Brewery. The beer also had a slightly skunky aroma to it.But then Home brews also have a slightly skunky nose. * I started to sweat profusely and my heart rate accelerated greatly. I felt like I had been poisoined.I was in near panic mode. Was this how food poisoining takes place. I decided to try and remain calm and then put away the dishes and went to bed, trying to keep my heart rate down and remain calm.Something was definitely happening. It had to be the beer.I eventually went to sleep and back to normal in the morning. I decided to try some of the food I had for dinner, the next night. It wasn't the meal that made me sick.
I usually drink Jim Beam. If I'm buying a bottle I usually buy Jim Beam Choice (haven't actually bought a bottle in a couple of years or so).
Homebrew (mine) or microbrew 95% of the time. I won't usually pass up a mass produced beer if offered, but I won't buy one if I can help it.
Not sure, I've only seen it sold in New England. There contact form is here. http://www.newenglanddistilling.com/contact/
All alcohol is sugar based. That's how you make alcohol--yeast breaks down sugar to make alcohol. Darker rum causes hangovers because of all of the extra stuff besides alcohol. That gives it it's taste as well.
