I also like just about anything from Sousa. When I'm down a bit on goes Sousa and off around the house I go. I'm just glad no-one's watching The Thunderer is a particular favourite.
I'll admit a slight bias, but I reckon this one is hard to beat: Even more rousing in this kind of form, of course (whichever version of the words is used!): This is another favorite of mine:
I used to work with a bloke from Coventry who was born in Wales. On night shift he'd be humming "Men of Harlech". It got to be a bit monotonous when you're on 7 nights straight in a car. Anyway when I went to Wales I made a specific point of sending a postcard (if no-one knows what a "postcard" is I wouldn't be surprised, you may have to Google it) from Harlech Castle just to let him know there were no hard feelings
Glad it hasn't put you off completely. I can see how it might get on your nerves after a while! Without that song, though, we wouldn't have had one of the absolute finest moments in movie history:
Harlech Men is indeed excellent. Who knows how many versions of the lyrics are out there, considering the tune dates back to the War of the Roses and was probably in Welsh? This may be the version Rick Rescorla sang to the green troopers of the legendary Seventh Cavalry ambushed in the Ia Drang and thirty-six years later calming scared civilians on 9/11/01. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...608383A0443EAC4D22B960&view=detail&FORM=VIRE5 Here’s another good one: Bravura by C.E. Hohenfriedberger and Koniggratzer are very good but not all that easy to march to. Alte Kameraden is also good and easier to march to. Panzerlied is good but they stole the melody from the Foreign Legion (Kepi Blanc).
For me it is definately John Philip Sousa without a doubt. Even in Army ceremonies, I have normally heard Army bands play Semper Fidelis. I selected this version, simply because it is conducted by John Philip Sousa himself, in 1890 with the Marine Corps Band. Most do not know that the theme to Monty Python is Sousa's "Liberty Bell March".

Not strictly military, but close!
The dozen or so marches which first come to mind would be these: - Storm the Fort [ye Knights of Labour] - King Cotton March - Commando March - Eagle Squadron March - Heart of Oak March - Invincible and Legendary - March of the Budyonny’s Cavalry - March of the Guard Launchers (Katyusha) - The Sacred War - White Army, Black Baron - Moskva Salute March - The Hymn of Brazilian Aviators Oh right, and how could I forget Solidarity Forever? It is certainly not an exhaustive list though. There are dozens of marches I enjoy listening to from time to time.
Not a favourite, exactly but a funeral march common to the Commonwealth forces, which commemorates the battle of Flodden field in 1513 when England crushed the Scots, Killing King James IV, 13 Earls, tens of lesser nobles, the Archbishop of St Andrews, two Bishops, two Abbots, three Clan chieftans and 10,000 men at arms. Almost an entire generation. "The Flowers O' The Forest" were a' wede awa'...
