With "The Walking Dead" returning to AMC, I thought it would be appropriate to ask what would you do in a Zombie situation. How would you get food to sustain you for long periods of time? Where would you take shelter? How big is your group and what skill sets do you want in that group? What gear will you have or want with you?

For me, Location: High school- high walls, good space, pool water can be drained and refilled with fish, kitchen supplies, wood shop, library, defensible, rooftop space for garden, fenced football field for livestock.
    Group size- 15+ people
Equipment/weaponry- semi-auto rifle, .40 handgun, machete, survival knife, sports equipment armor, long range walkies, high capacity backpack

Schools are a pretty good location. They are often fenced in, and have some sort of stored food in the cafeteria. But the problem with the Zombie Apocalypse is that unless you are already prepared, you're pretty much dead meat (heh!).

In my case, since I work at home, I would probably be there when the Zombie hit the fan. I have weapons and ammunition at home, but my home isn't very defensible. Low windows and a glass patio door could easily collapse with the press of many biters trying to get in. So unless I could relocate to a more secure location, I wouldn't make it.

Best locations to hole up in would be firestations, since they have food, beds, and security already. National Guard Armory's or Military Reserve unit buildings would also be good. They are usually fenced and have living conditions, vehicles, fuel, MRE's, and weapons and ammo. But large military bases would be out, since they are usually open with sometimes miles of border to secure. There would probably be secure, fenced areas on those bases, but the people who are already there would be unlikely to welcome another civilian mouth to feed.

Basically you're looking for any fenced area that has the tools of survival available, maybe a Wal Mart warehouse?

I have a feeling you wouldn't get a chance to pick your group. They would pick you, so it wouldn't be like you could pick people that would have needed skills. However if you have that option, I think that Walking Dead has taught us to pick the redneck.

We have plenty of rednecks in Indiana! I think I should have stated the question on what skills you would find most desirable in a group. I would not pick a supermarket because I do not think it is as defensible like most places, however, Walmart's do carry a lot of good equipment and ammo. Even then, that is the first place people will go for, the gun shops and food markets. For me, Ill hit up the gardening store for some seeds for the long term and canned or dry goods. When it quiets down a bit, then I would start raiding stores. I think your idea of the Firehouse is a good spot to hold out.

    I didn't mean a Wal-Mart store, I meant a Wal-Mart warehouse.

I got the idea from a Brit TV show I saw on Netflix called Survivors. A flu like illness wipes out most of the human race. In one episode, they ran across a guy who had holed up in a grocery store warehouse. They have more supplies than any one store would have, and no one thinks of them. You're right, Wal-Mart or store's like that are the first place that people would think about, so everyone would make a rush to those, but the warehouses that supply them? I doubt very few people would think of them unless they actually worked at the store or warehouse.

It's been done, but a prison is a great candidate. An nuclear aircraft carrier might be a good one, plenty of power, moat all around. As for armament, I have an SKS, a Colt M4, a Mossburg 12ga, a Springfield XDM 45ACP is my CCW, and a little Ruger .22 in the boot. Silencers for them would be helpful. That should get us started. A machete, survival knife, et all was already mentioned, but necessary.

That is a good point, the question is whether or not it is defensible.

If the left really believed their doomsday climate change they would be the ones pushing prepping. Their beloved government is pushing it. DHS has a section about prepps. FEMA want people to have three weeks of food and other needed goods. Hell NASA is telling it's employes to prep. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm33qNR2mVA

I would just wait with my prepps like Obama told me to do. Watch as my liberal neighbors as they die from not being armed and The Lord Obama don't save them die. And them go raid there homes. Yuck liberal food. Kale chips and tofu. But it's food

I looked at a few links for Wal-Mart distribution centers and most seem to have fencing and security, so I imagine they are defensible by a large group of people.

Not too far from my house there is a big, practically abandoned office building I happen to have a key for. All the windows are tinted and every floor is separated from the staircase by a massive steel door. That's where I would go. There are several supermarkets and a hardware store nearby, so it makes a good base for supply runs (we're talking slow zombies here, right?), and it has two entrances, so any time you have to leave it you could lure all zombies in the area to one of them and escape through the other.

A crew would help for the aircraft carrier, but you do have a unlimited supply of food and water lol. Nice choice of weaponry too. Silencers would be good, and they would probably have then on the ship.

    - - - Updated - - -

For this, It will be slow zombies. Similar to the walking dead zombies. Nice choice, but how would you defend yourself?

To be honest, I have more proof that zombies are possible than the President, John Kerry, or Al Gore have of global warming.

"Zombie"...is a term that is relative rather than absolute...… and at this moment....... the Indigo Children... are in a sense surrounded by metaphorical zombies..... it is imperative that they understand from the Dr. Chew Snow research... that they are predicted to WIN the coming war!!!!!!????

In this case, the definition is a corpse that is reanimated and has every desire to consume human flesh and spead the illness.

Former atheist Howard STorm met some seriously nasty dude's and dudesses during the first part of his NDE who could be compared with Zombie's or Vampires????!!!!

Ms. Anne Rice, author of the Lestat series....... published his book..."My Descent Into Death."

Whatever terrain you find yourself in. I am in the mid-west with fairly wet terrain. So i would make sure that my equipment and my clothing could survive water and also be durable in all climates. To defend my base, I would use siege warfare tactics, building Trebuchet's to launch large rocks or propane tanks to stop a hoard and other means. Infantry tactics would be roman and Spartan like in nature using shield walls and spears to take down enemies, Archers and riflemen will thin out hoards of zombies. Raiding buildings would be similar to modern day military building raids. Securing all the rooms and areas of a building, taking out enemy combatants or zombies but watching our fire for unarmed survivors. Firearms would only be used as a last ditch effort because of noise, Melee weapons would be the primary weapons. Light sports armor and tough leather will protect survivors from zombie attacks while allowing them to still be light.

    Anything else?

yeah, right, like you'd have time and material to buid all that, right? Me, I'd go straight to the nearest military base, stock up on all the ammo and food there, get an armored humvee, tow behind it a fuel trailer, and head for either the mississipi, great Lakes or the ocean. Anchor a bout 1/2 out and your zombie worries are over. They'll all rot within a few months,. It's the LIVE people wanting your stuff that will be your concern. You could be set up just fine in 72 hours, no problem

Problem with that is gas and other people with the same idea. How many zombies do you think are heading right for a military base? If there are no zombies, who says the government isn't going to shoot you on sight? Also the great lakes will freeze and the rotters can walk to you on the ice. The oceans provide little safety because of storms. Rivers might be okay though but you need to make sure your ship does not drift down stream due to high tide and rivers can freeze as well. You would need supplies to cook food and purify water, some of those supplies can run scarce over time. These zombies can last for years.

Many large lakes have islands. You could fish for food.

Water doesn't stop zombies. I forget which zombie movie it was but they crossed a river underwater and attacked a human settlement.
