I find the image interesting as it as it highlights some social stereotypes. A woman in a long skirt will be seen by some as chasten while others will see her as a prude. A woman in a mini skirt will be seen by some as free spirited while others will see her as a tramp. But in my own experience you cannot accurately judge a book by its cover.
I'd date (read, hit it and quit it) provacative and up I'd marry proper and flirty same goes with tattoo's. I'd do dirty things to a good looking girl covered in tattoos.... but pass on marrying them. girls that wear short stuff all the time, then complain that they only find guys who want one thing or girls that are covered in tattoo's who complain that they have 3 kids, 2 baby daddies and 0 child support checks both need to understand the message they send guys by their appearance. I wear a tie to an interview for the same reason.... it sends a better message to the target audience
All of the above is certainly judging a book by its cover. I don't see why any person should dress how others think they should dress .. sounds too much like like the Taliban telling women to wear a burka for my liking.
I'm not telling a woman how to dress. if she wants to wear a short skirt.... that's fine. But don't get upset when I don't call back the next day, or I only call you when I'm horny.... me wearing a tie to my job interview has ZERO RELEVANCE on my ability to teach a class. But I would not DREAM of going to an interview wearing jeans and flip-flops with a budweiser shirt on. do you show up to court wearing a novelty t-shirt? Does doing so make you more or less guilty of a crime at that point in time? Absolutely not, but you still would be a fool to show up not in a tie. so you can agree with dress affecting how people treat you or not.... but reality and history says different... FWIW - you are wrong for the right reasons. on long road trips, I wear a tie just in case I get pulled over out of town. I figure I have a better chance of things going smooth if I'm in a tie, rather than having a sideways hat, wearing thug type clothes or a pair of jortes and a dirty wife-beater....
Have you ever met a women who wears super short "whore level" (LOL) shirts and wasn't promiscuous? I haven't.
Stereotypes exist for a reason. There are many exceptions, but you can wager you will probably be correct.
This post could be the winner for the most misogynistic post I have read in 2013........ - - - Updated - - - Yes the reason stereotypes exist is small minded bigotry.
yay.... what do I win? reality speaks... I didn't say I agree with any of it. I just would be stupid not to acknowledge it. I will always wear a tie to an interview... not because wearing one makes me more qualified.... but because I want to be perceived by people (interviewer in this case) a positive way. wearing a tie says I want to be considered as a professional. Wearing a Lynard Skynard shirt with blue jeans and flipflops says to people who don't know me.... "DO NOT HIRE" wearing a short skirt also tells an audience how they want to be perceived by others that don't know the girl. if people consider it bigotry to teach my daughter the realities (and dangers) of dressing provacatively.... so be it. I'd rather be considered a bigot by an idealist, than the father of a raped girl.
so if you had a son would you teach him to hit it and leave? You know he is hitting someone's daughter.
Being the age that I am and having attended a number of interviews for various jobs, as well as interviewed numerous people, one of the questions I ask when invited to an interview is the expectation of dress code .. I have had to wear a suit for some and for other, more enlightened, employers I have worn very casual clothes .. considering some of the biggest crooks have worn suits I see it as no indication of the reliability of the person nor of their trustworthy nature. I use the same stance with a woman, I do not assume that just because she chooses to dress in a mini skirt that she is a 'slut' only out for a good time (It usually takes about 5 mins of conversation to discover whether that is true or not), before being married I met some very conservatively dressed women who would rip your clothes off the minute they got you alone and on the flip side I have met women who dress quite provocatively who were as chaste as a nun. Perhaps if men stopped looking at some women as mere sex objects and treated them as they would like to be treated the whole "she was asking for it" mentality would fall into the gutter where it belongs.
Then you have been frequenting the wrong places .. I have, throughout the years, met many who are proud of the way they look and have no intention of jumping into bed with any and every man that tries it on.
That hardly makes sense considering women only dress like that to create or maintain emotional entanglements with men.
Perhaps, but that is their choice. Some people actually dress the way they do simple because they like it... while others dress for effect or to conform to a societal standard. The social norms that I follow, I do so because I agree with said social norm and not because it is expected of me. The social norms that I reject are not rejected in an effort to be a rebel... I reject them simply because I disagree with them.
Women only like wearing miniskirts for the reason I said, which means those women are not "free spirited" in any meaningful sense.
Civilizations have done an extraordinary thing making males as civilized in actions as they have managed to do considering that beneath the tie and dress shirt and pressed slacks they are omnivore predators with a built in set of genetic imperatives to (among other things) dominate and reproduce. But even all the indoctrination and training in the world is only going to make so much progress; and so getting the average male to cease overtly looking at females as sex objects . . . is about as far as it goes. Nothing short of a lobotomy or neutering can stop a healthy male from 'thinking' about sex. You might as well order a tiger to cease thinking about meat.
Thanks for your input. A couple questions if I may. First let me say that I am not trying to be argumentative but am just interested in more info. A girl "provocative and up" is good enough for a roll in the hay but not good enough to marry? Why? That's fine with jobs, but not much else IMO. Personally when I see a person dressed in a stereotypical socially acceptable way, I do not assume that they are good or bad people. I assume that they are human and given enough time around them I can better judge their character. I believe that judging the book by its cover is a less than accurate way to measure someone.
You are of course welcome to your own opinions. I haven't dated in decades, but if I was still dating, I would applaud your choices, as it just left more wonderful women for me.
Yes. But until I did I had the same view as you. Stereotypes are a dangerous thing IMO as they never apply to all as there is always an exception to the rule. But I understand your view too... because if every woman you have ever met who dresses in very revealing clothing is named candy and is known as the town bicycle... then of course that will influence your view. But this does not mean that your experience typifies the experience of all. That's great logic until you are incorrect... thus the fallibility of stereotypes.
Oh I agree, though when that dominating state of mind is expressed so openly it turns my stomach .. I readily admit to the same thoughts .. however I tend to keep them to myself and not degrade a woman by turning her into a public piece of meat.
and of course you have something to back this up. of course it would never enter your head that a woman dresses in a mini skirt because she feels good, or simply because she wants to, it obviously must be because she is trying "to create or maintain emotional entanglements with men"
Well, yeah, there are harassment laws designed to prevent that sort of thing and so whether by law or by cultural conditioning some progress in overt behavior is made . . . but not all that much in regards to private thoughts . . . although I understand that the Japanese are currently bewailing the fact that -- as I recall anyway -- huge numbers of their young males and females would now rather live vicariously via internet porn rather than actually date and mate . . . and so perhaps one can also take things too far, eh?
I hope that you are not implying that wearing sexy clothing will get a woman raped... because if you are I wounder what your thoughts would be of the many women who dress in a socially acceptable way and have been the victims of rape.
I suppose the old adage of there is a time and place springs to mind, and like most things they always seem to be taken too far. C'est la vie
