The neoconservative movement was founded with in the liberal base of the Democratic party by liberal Jews. When the radical left aka "New Left" hijacked the Democratic party during the early 70's many liberals including the vast majority of neoconservatives left the Democratic party and came under the GOP tent. Some patriotic liberals remained with in the Democratic party like Congressman Charlie Wilson. The GOP welcomed the neocons knowing they needed them as allies to stop communist expansion in the world, to defeat the USSR and win the Cold War. The neocons were allies with in the GOP. But after Reagan won the Cold War, the neocons no longer had a purpose.
Of course we don't understand the SUBTLE leftist perspective on this, how when Obama and the Clintons and the DNC were blatantly involved in collusion up to their necks, it's 'nothing to see here' and 'Look! A squirrel!' time but when it's even a totally unverified RUMOR that Trump is remotely looking as if he's been within a lightyear of a possible collusion then it's 'All hate-filled leftists on deck!' time.
