More harrassment of Spanish speakers

i speak german. and i have spoken plenty of english in germany with germans. but go to an autobahn service station or a grocer outside of berlin, munich, frankfurt, etc., and say to anyone working there "keine deutsche. bitte englisch?" or better yet, "morgen... es tut mir leid, meine deutsche ist schlecht. sprichst du englisch?" the response will almost always be a polite "es tut mir leid, nein... bist du brite?" to which of course you'd politely reply, "nein, amerikanisch. ja, militär. mein mann ist bei den united states marine corps. ich brauche bitte etwas schnaps und eine flasche zirbenlikör. haben sie es?" or you could just point and look stupid.

so if anyone here is ass-uming, it is you dude.

the point is if you are going to live in someone else's country, the least you could do is try to learn the language. except in france... they would rather you stick to whatever gutter tongue you were born with than butcher their sweet linquistic poetry.

 

Why? What difference would it make and how would you enforce the law since most English words are derived from other languages? Should we be arrested for saying 'taco'? Would we be breaking the law if we ordered 'tiramisu' at an Italian restaurant?

 

the overwhelming majority of business in germany is conducted in german or english. not turkish. yes, if you want a tasty doner kebab, or directions to the red light district, turkish will come in handy. possibly if you take a taxi, but most of those guys speak at kleast english and german.

Strangely direct translation sometimes changes meaning of words.

In Russia, a bull means a strong gangster. In USA, a bull means a cop.

 

Learning cuss words in as many languages as you can is a bonus.

 

What difference would it make if the language were official or not? People will speak however they choose to and there's nothing to be gained by adding the title "Official" to it.

 

the german people are very friendly and they will (unlike the french) gladly speak german or english with you. the only reason they will not speak english is if they don't know it. i lived there for 3 years, i know what i'm talking about.

but still, you miss the point... likely intentionally as i detect your condescending tone. please tell me you're not one of those ugly americans who refuse to even try to learn another language because dammit people should speak english when i visit their country!! i've met these ******-holes and they are not the people i chose to spend my time with when we were there. contrary to your ass-umption, the majority of the world does not speak english and should not bow to your demands that they do.

I spent a year in Germany and the first thing I did was take a class in German, but that was over 50 years ago. No one is accusing you of not knowing what you're talking about so why so defensive? Bow to my demands? I've made no such demands - quite the opposite. I'm for freedom of speech no matter what language is spoken. Life's too short to bother about such trivial nonsense, for which there is no practical remedy, which is to say there is no way to enforce English only.

Except there isn't anything that suggests they CANT speak English. They simply were speaking Spanish to each other, which is very common, for most immigrants because it's easier to communicate with each other, especially when one of them could have trouble with English. This **** just got angry that someone dared to speak Spanish in her presence. People like this piss me off. Most of them can barely speak English to begin with themselves.
