    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...-not-speaking-english/?utm_term=.5b0239e2d5b2

Woman decides to harrass and insult people for shopping while speaking Spanish.

She said she finds Spanish "offensive".

Luckily, a brave Patriotic American came to their defense, and told this bigot to leave them alone.

Why can't people mind their own business? Why are these Snowflakes sooo offended by the sound of languages other than English?

    Its really pathetic.

    Immigrants are expected to assimilate.

If theyre not going to assimilate, theyre not going to be Americans.

you can speak any language you want. but if you come to america and don’t bother to learn english, you can exepct to enjoy a long career of cleaning hotel rooms, picking vegetables, and not much else. also, official documents, election ballots, etc. should be in english.

if you want to participate in civic life, you learn the language.

if i move to germany, i should learn german.

How do you know the women in the OP don’t know how to speak English?
Curious....if you moved to a foreign country would you NEVER speak English? Are you telling me you would ONLY ever speak the language of that country?
My guess is no. While you would learn the language, for obvious reasons, you would still speak English when you could. You know this.

I don't support harassing someone in public because they speak Spanish. However, we should recognize that of all the different ethnic groups that immigrate to the U.S., Hispanics are the most resistant to learning English.

If you move to a new country, you will need to learn the local language in order to participate in that society. But that has nothing to do with personal conversations - at home, or in public.

Question -- would you oppose a few veterans on active duty speaking a foreign language with each other within their units?

Except there is no official language, there has been a long history of groups in the US retaining their mother tongue and nothing gives people the right to harass someone else for the language they're speaking.

Probably, or English, or Turkish, it all depends. On a recent stag weekend in Berlin, my reasonably decent German was much less useful than someone else's fluent Turkish quite a lot of the time. The lingua franca in SAP's offices in Walldorf tends to be English.

Neither are foreign tourists on vacation but that's no reason to be rude. And most likely they were speaking to each other.
There's no law saying they must speak English so people should mind their own business. I don't understand why they have to get all riled up over something that impacts their lives not 1 iota.

As would I. And there is a reason air traffic controllers and pilots all speak English all over the world.

And never speak English while in Germany? Fat chance of that. You ass-ume they can't speak English while they enjoy a private conversation. Pathetic really.

Assimilation goes a lot further than language. It IS actually possible to assimilate into another country without speaking the language of that country 24/7. If you and your family immigrated to a non-English speaking country, would you talk to your family in the language of that country?

We always speak Russian -- never experienced harassment. Maybe Spanish speakers do.

If they're talking to their family members, there is no reason for them to speak English. It's just rude to stop them.

I think in two languages -- Russian and English.

There are a few words which only me and my parents understand.

There are not so few words known only to CCitizen.

I served in the military with friends who speak Italian, Russian, Tagalo( sp?), Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. They all speak English fluently and served their country well. I have engineer friends from Mexico and Peru. They speak English very well also.

I don’t care what language they speak, as long as they don’t expect me to use it.
