    U
No, in the Senate AND the House individual representatives vote.

The only two that have unique ability are McConnell and Pelosi, who can block a bill from coming to a vote.

For years, Ryan and Boehner held the office of Speaker of the House - thus, Boehner could prevent the 2013 bipartisan immigration reform bill from being voted on - even though the whip count showed it would pass.

Had that bill passed, we would have had $44 billion for the southern border, a revamped visa system (which is how most have come and stayed illegally), and enforced job protection through e-verify.

    Civics 101.

You must have been responding to someone else, as this post doesn't address anything I said.

Oh, probably a general remark for all of the forum. Based on personal experience with the SNAP program.

You don’t really believe that the wall will cost 5 million do you? Estimates are about double or triple that. Democrats are more than willing to pay billions for security and that includes technology and more guards.

What wall did Obama build? Bush built 700 miles...not 2000.
The act approved was before Obama was president
What is sudden urgency for the wall when illegal immigrants are leaving at greater rates than they are coming in? Why the sudden urgency when for two years you had all both houses....This is all about trumps sick ego

How the Senate actually works 101

Although each of the dueling measures was expected to fail even before Thursday, it was hoped twin defeats might spur the two sides into a more serious effort to strike a compromise. Almost every proposal needs 60 votes to advance in the Senate, which is under 53-47 Republican control.

The final vote on the GOP bill was 50-47. West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin was the lone Democrat to cross over and support the GOP package, which would have provided $5.7 billion for President Trump's proposed border wall while also offering several immigration-related concessions and tightening asylum rules. GOP Sens. Tom Cotton and Mike Lee voted against the Republican measure.

I wish Bush had built 700 miles. Obama took full credit for that wall. He voted for it as a then Senator and as President oversaw it.

We will leave the light on for those leaving. Apparently you have not yet watched the video of the open border. So here it is again.

This chant it is over Trump's ego makes no sense of any kind.

You may be the only poster that alleges Obama did not build the wall. He boasted it was complete.

Watch this video and tell me how complete you think it is?

How much in wages do walls cost? How often do walls take sick time off or family time or vacation time? Trump will add more security. But where the walls exist, the DHS reports it stops 95 percent of the crossings. Actual cost to complete? No of course it costs more. But they don't simply wave a wand and the wall is up the next day.

Look at the wall like this. Say you owned a 1000 sq mile cattle ranch and wanted to prevent your cattle from leaving. A wall or pay hundreds of men to guard the border 24/7, for 365 and add more for vacation time off and other missed time. A fence needs no vacation.

Renee, this man is the border expert. I suggest you pay close attention to what he reports.

The Senate today took up two proposals: 1) a short-term spending bill to fund the government through February 8 without money for the border wall, which House Democrats have passed; and 2) the Trump proposal, negotiated among Republicans, to open the government with $5 billion in funding for the border wall in exchange for a short-term extension of two existing immigration programs.

As expected both bills failed, however, in the Republican Senate the Republican proposal -- Trump's proposal -- received less votes than the Democratic bill. Imagine that! One Democrat, Manchin from W.Virginia, crossed over and voted for the Republican bill. Two Republicans voted against Trump's bill. Six Republicans joined Democrats in voting for the Democratic bill.

    Imagine that!

What was Trump's reaction to the vote. Once again he illustrates how tone deaf he is. He suggested a three-week stopgap funding measure that must include a “prorated down payment” for his U.S.-Mexico border barrier. His top spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said any short-term spending bill “would only work if there is a large down payment on the wall.”

Either he is completely unaware of his position on this issue, or he is doing best impersonation of a Putin puppet and wants this shutdown to go on indefinitely, creating chaos within the American government and untold misery for the people. Farmers and the stock market go without key data. Home loans are in limbo. Already there is a breakdown in FBI investigations, arrests, and indictments. Already there is a breakdown in the Coast Guard, entrusted with guarding our shores. The breakdown in airport security is getting worse by the day.

Ask yourself a question. If you are flying, how do you feel about your plane be guided by air traffic controllers who are worried about their next house payment and the lack of cash to buy groceries for the family?

Trump threatened to keep the federal government partly closed for “months or even years” if he did not get his way.

I can understand Trump not knowing the significance of this vote or trying to bluff his way through. All he knows is his gullible fan base. They will believe anything he says. First he tells them Democrats are flocking to his side. Then he asks for the money in a different way as if we were all idiots.

    We are not.

What I don't understand is the position of Republican leadership when it comes to Trump and his maniacal idea of border security and his medieval wall. Trump preached all of this in the run-up to the 2018 elections. The result: The Republican Party lost the House, losing 40 seats, along with several state houses and state legislatures.

Even the Senate was a "victory" for the Democrats. 26 Democratic seats were up for grabs and only nine Republican seats. The Reps won only two additional seats. I would call that a victory for the Dems.

The 2018 elections should be a warning to the Republican leadership that Trump's policies lead to defeat.

But that isn't happening, not yet, anyway. Furthermore, the GOP leadership is paying no attention to the desires of the American voter. A recent poll, conducted by CBS News, finds that 71 percent of Americans “don’t think the issue of a border wall is worth a government shutdown, which they say is now having a negative impact on the country.”

Morning Consult’s poll shows that Trump continues to carry the bulk of the blame among voters for the stalemate. ... In this week’s poll nearly half of voters (49 percent) say the President is responsible — up 6 points since the shutdown began. At the same time, 35 percent of voters blame congressional Democrats. 35 percent is Trump's base.

The unpopularity of Trump’s position suggests Democrats have little reason to cave to Trump’s demand of $5.7 billion for the wall as a condition of reopening the government. Then, of course, there is the very real threat that, if Trump succeeds, he will do it all over again the next time a CR is due, which will be this year. Already, this is the longest shutdown in American history.

That same poll finds Trump’s disapproval at an all-time high of 57 percent. Notably, Trump’s disapproval among independents — 60 percent — is also at its highest ever.

So, again, I can understand Trump ignoring all of this. He is not very bright and all he cares about his gullible base. But it is very surprising that the GOP feels it is necessary to go against the American voter and support Trump's border wall.

Well no some people on welfare have children because the religious right has spent endless effort trying to deny them access to contraceptives, the morning after pill and abortions.

The reality is that the drive for sex is universal and not just for procreation despite what the religious idiots want to pretend. Trying to punish having sex by not allowing methods to prevent it from resulting in children is one of the really sick things that religion has tried to promulagate on society.

Trump's white supremacists and your anti-fascists aside, the p-grabber appears to be caving on his attempted extortion to get $5.7 billion for his wall that he had repeatedly promised Mexico would pay for and that most Americans do not want

I assure you those with the black masks and clubs you call antifascists are no more so than was Mussolini. Martin Luther King is celebrated as a black supremacist.

You are free to celebrate Martin Luther King as a black supremacist if that is what you need to do.

One person was killed and more than 19 others were injured in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a car plowed through a group of counter-protesters who were demonstrating against an alt-right and white nationalist rally.

None of the victims were carrying weapons or wearing masks.

Unbelievable! You dodged once again! I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Alright, let's try a third time! No analogy this time and I don't know why I bothered with analogies because there really is no need for them in this case! If you were walking through the desert until you reached a 30 foot wall do you think that it might make it SLIGHTLY more difficult for you to continue your journey through the desert? Do you want to explain how you would breach it with ease? I won't be surprised if you dodge ONCE again! Keep in mind, that I am asking you this because you questioned if a wall would be effective.

You failed miserably at answering my two questions. Do you want to have another go?

    1. Just because MOST arrive via ports of entry, why does that mean that the government should forget about the rest?

    2. How do known criminals who have been deported get back in?

Again, are you saying that it shouldn't be started unless it can be done all in one go? Remember, you made the argument that 5 billion would not be enough to complete it and you seemed to use this as an argument for not giving Trump the money. Do you stand by it?

You dodged for a THIRD time on this one! Will there be a fourth? Name one single "RACIST" claim. If you are even remotely capable that is,
although you are starting to demonstrate that you are not! You COULD just say that you don't actually have anything!

So EVERYONE trying to cross the border needs aid? You dodged this one. Wanna try again?

So US Code doesn't mention the term, "illegal alien?"

What is the relevance of this bill today?

It doesn't address it as in it won't keep out ALL drugs or people? Nobody is suggesting that, but do you acknowledge that it would reduce SOME?

Well what is the blade supposed to grab onto? When sawing wood, it is sawed from the edge. Otherwise, how would the blade get into the wood?

You know what, I would TOTALLY go for that as a policy! Women and children barely commit crime, so crime would still reduce! Those children can grow up in a superior society and culture and not become criminals. Keep out the men, that's a GREAT idea Renee!
