The problem with that is if everyone else is gaunt and thin, and you're not, you will be made and tracked, and you will have to defend your little fort which most likely isn't very defensible against an armed mob.

For the young and healthy for whom Corina will be most likely little more than the common cold it will seem like much ado about nothing. If you're older than hell and have COPD it may well be a death sentence but then so is COPD.

Got most of my groceries at a regional grocery store yesterday and finished that at a Publix this morning. The only thing they were short of was bread, a wanted some hamburger buns, but a lady working there told me they were getting a delivery in the morning. I think the shelves will start filling back up now. Still don't get the water and toilet paper thingy.

I'm over in Baldwin county and as I noted above was able to get everything. I had gone to Walmart earlier in the week and got most stuff, didn't need paper products. Decided to stock up a little more and between Rouse's, got to keep the wine cooler stocked up :rock_slayer:, and Publix got everything. No panics, everyone being friendly and nice. There were 4 deep lines and my line the manager came over and told us after the person at the front finished the clerk was going to take a quick bathroom break, no one complained and I told how much we appreciate the hard work they were doing. Bread is baked over your way and Publix getting a truckload tomorrow.

Well. like I said, my area is predominantly [78% registered] Republican and every day the shelves are re-emptied. SO much for the demographics' theory! You don't know who's doing the panic buying any more than I do, unless you are canvassing the shoppers. My guess is its more the "at risk" groups doing the shopping sprees. And around here it's the [vastly conservative] elderly!

Those over 60, especially if they have an underlying condition, are those who should have already built up a stash of food and supplies enabling them to hunker down in isolation for an extended period.

50 and under don't have much to worry about.

Yeah, but the young can be carriers passing it on to the more vulnerable. Would you feel that the young shouldn't be inconvenienced by some temporary lifestyle changes, because they may not be affected strongly by this virus, even if that means that they keep spreading it through the population and to many middle aged people, who may not have the luxury of staying home?

BTW: There are now more than 3,000 cases in the US. What will it take for Trump fans to stop playing this down? 10,000 cases? 100,000? 10 million? We clearly see that the number of cases increases exponentially, as predicted. The denying of the seriousness of the situation will only go so far before reality will hit.

They said I was a senior citizen at 55. That was almost 2 decades ago. I have chosen to inconvenience myself while coronavirus plays out. There's a lot more of the young than there is of us old whittlers. I'd say inconvenience the smaller group.

I'm in rural England, fairly middle-class with probably an even mix of left and right.
I just went to the supermarket after work. The store was busier than usual for a Sunday afternoon but the shelves were pretty well stocked. The only empty shelves were for bread, pasta and toilet paper.
I got the few things I needed with no problem apart from having to buy slightly more expensive eggs as the cheap ones had all gone.
I asked my friend who works there if people had been acting crazy. She said a few of them had but mainly for hand santitisers and toilet rolls.
No one was wearing face masks and everybody was using trolleys and baskets as normal without gloves. I've started taking a large bag with me and filling it direct from the shelves so I don't have to touch the handles on the trolleys.
At work today (I'm a chef and am currently working in a local pub) numbers were about half the usual for Sunday lunch. The average age was about 70 with 2 or 3 people so old and frail they couldn't even hold their own plates at the carvery. It struck me that these are the people who should be taking the most care but they were shaking hands, blowing their noses at the table without washing their hands afterwards and touching their faces constantly. As a chef, I have a highly developed sense of bad hygiene practises so I notice these things more than most.
I put it down to a belligerent ''Dunkirk spirit'' from the generation who grew up during or just after the war.
If I were that age I wouldn't be going out to eat in a crowded restaurant for the next couple of months.
I'm expecting the government to tell pubs and restaurants to close within the next couple of weeks so work is going to dry up for me soon.

Rational people keep about a month's worth of essentials stocked up, for things like Hurricanes, earthquakes, crop failures, supply shortages, extended power or water outtages...you know, things that actually happen in the real world. Nice job with your attempted broad brush and falsehood.

Why do people buy bottled water????Is the water coming out of your faucet so rancid you cannot drink it??? Do you brush your teeth using it??? You have absolutely no idea of the source of most bottled waters and the sanitary or lack there of conditions they are bottled under. I live in a condo community with on site well water where our water samples are sent to a local lab for analysis mot residents probably have a similar water analysis lab they could have their faucet water analyzed at. Save money drink the water coming out of your home tap.

I use my tap water for everything but drinking water at work. I have to have two gallons of water per man per 8 hour shift at the start of each work day per osha requirements. It’s too inconvenient to wash and sanitize, and keep full, water dispensers and stock disposable cups. I buy bottled water two shrink wrapped pallets at a time and keep it in a shipping container at work.

You have enough liberals emptying the shelves to force conservatives into defensive buying

I have cases of bottled water, cases of TP, a freezer chest full of food and shelves full of canned food, we live off pinto beans and flour tortillas much of the time anyway, and they are easy to store... BUT this is our normal state, we haven't stockpiled anymore than usual.. we just live a long way from the grocery store (250 miles one direction)
P.S. I agree with the "bottled water" statement above.. but my wife insist on it, and it's mainly for drinking while at work.
I suppose we will be sure something is seriously wrong up north when we no longer get mail.

I live in a 50 year old townhome.
During the construction of this house lead components were a standard in this area.
I have spring water delivery service. It’s $40 a month and you get the cooler and 6 giant bottles of spring water. That water is used for drinking and for beverages. We use tap water only for washing and for soups.
While this water delivery didn’t completely eliminate the risk of us having lead in our food, it greatly reduced the quantities that might end up in our everyday food.
Your association well water might be good on the intake side, but internal plumbing components that are outside of your condo could be made out of lead. That’s the problem I’m having - even if my townhome doesn’t have any components left from 50 years ago, there is no guarantee there are no lead components having contact with this water from Lake Michigan to 30 miles away at my home.

I bet the real number of infected in the US isn’t 3,000. More likely to be between 3M and 30M.
In the US where most need to pay a copay to see a doctor, who goes to see a professional over a mild cold?

The numbers aren't a surprise to conservatives. The surprise is the panicking from others in regard to the virus which in effect is along the lines of the flu. Thirty million contract the flu each year. Five hundred thousand are hospitalized from it. And thirty thousand die each year from the flu. It is also very contagious. So you should be more concerned about the flu than covid19. The prevention and treatment is essentially the same for both.

A lot of us live in the so called middle of nowhere, to us it is the center of the universe.
