True words, eliminate all gun laws and there will be no gun crimes anymore, but criminals will still be committing murders. The problem is not guns it's criminals, but some people want to blame things, not people for the problems they cause, it is as illogical as blaming Ford for drunk driving deaths.
If there were no cars things would be better in terms of drunk driving deaths. The thing is cars are useful and have a value and purpose. Guns on the other hand simply serve to drive metal projectiles with often deadly force into living flesh. Most societies have a reasonably similar number of ‘criminals’ (depending on the laws), but America has an astonishing number of spree killings. If the solution to spree killings is not banning guns, but the psychology of the shooter, what provision for mental health care is currently available to all Americans? Maybe spree killings is seen as no big deal in America.
I say yes, provided they are of sound mind and not convicted felons. The Taliban just got them some M249s from Uncle Sammy paid for by the citizens, but citizens can't have them? That wasn't in the Founding Fathers intentions. People had kegs of powder back in those days.
P Provided they are of sound mind? Isn’t the very desire to own a killing machine an indication of an unsound mind? What are the mental health services available to all Americans designed to diagnose and then help all Americans with soundness of mind challenges?
No. Have you ever had a hog charge you or a gator chase you? How about a Diamandback or a Moccasin? (Diamondbacks don't chase, Moccasins do) How about a Grizzly Bear? Being able to protect yourself is designated as a fundamental God-given right in the US. Maybe you should be dropped into a forest without a gun and see if you really think they're so bad or not. That 2nd day you might be thinking about shooting you something to eat. Besides, the 2nd amendment was written as a deterrent to a tyrannical government as well.
Forget about the Taliban! This time last week, would you have said that Americans should be able to buy an FGM-148?
How much fun could some piece of crap psychopath have in some remote desert location, engaging airliners?
Ah. So gun ownership is principally there to protect yourself from dangerous animals is it? It is possible to protect yourself without a huge weapon isn’t it. Can you relate the events that have happened in America where gun ownership has deterred the tyrannical actions of a tyrannical government? Is the justification a ‘Just in case’ one…to anticipate a charge by a pack of man eating squirrels, or to shoot and kill an officer of the law if they are following the orders of what the person with the gun unilaterally decides are the orders of a tyrant? It is not a God given right either, it is a rule or situation decided on by people…it is more of an instinct to protect oneself, not a God given right. In terms of spree killings, they tend to happen in places like schools, not forests.
You have not explained your ‘sound mind’ element. Rather than being prepared to defend yourself from a charging creature, to what extent are mental health services and intervention available to all Americans? To explore your concept of ‘sound mind’? Imagine if all the resources used to create the killing machines were used to improve mental health, and nurture ‘sound minds’.
Any arm in common use for lawful purposes. By the definition in Caetano, machine guns, short barreled rifles and silencers shouldn't be restricted.
Funding public mental health care is not the responsibility of private enterprise. Spree shootings by mentally ill individuals are statistically rare, and represent a tiny percentage if homicides every year. We'd be better served cracking down hard on gang and drug violence.
It looks as if when it comes to spree killings you, and maybe most Americans, can simply stomach them.
The US isn't like those places. What, in your opinion, would it take to stop all spree shootings in the US?
