Good song. But not a good rendition, in this video.

Very few Z songs to pick from. Bowie was a favorite of mine.

HERE IS THE EXPLANATION, to come back to, for those who skip the reading, & go straight to listening-- for after you start thinking to yourself, "What the heck is going on with this weird, unlikely grouping of songs?"

I just listened to the Buffalo Springfield song, by Neil Young, "Expecting to Fly." It is a real mishmosh of ideas, so not as cohesive as I would prefer. It is rather slow, but the strings are delicately sensuous. Anyway, the thing that I find interesting is hearing similarities to at least parts of other songs, in the various parts of that song. So, let me explain the connections that I make, and let me know what any of you think, of my associations.

    Description:
After a dramatic, spacey sounding opening, starts the verse. Can't you just hear an early iteration of "Cinnamon Girl?" Then there's a little bit in the short bridge section, presaging the sound of Pink Floyd-- think about just before they return to their verse: have become, "Comfortably Numb." The unusual opening of Young's song also, IMO, is reminiscent of the sound of Floyd's (later) song.

That bridge leads to the refrain, which is more distinct in its shape, more lyrical, and melodically flowing, in nature, being pushed along by a more compellingly rhythmic current. This is where I hear the connection to the oldie, by Leslie Gore-- of which its unexpectedness, strikes me as funny-- "You Don't Own Me."

Since we are on "C," I will first lay out my connections, and put the song to compare with each of them, "Expecting To Fly," at the end.

Just a note-- as I am not a fan of Neil's "Cinnamon Girl," I found this version which, believe it or not, I like better. It is sung by solo artist Matthew Sweet, along with Susanna Hoffs (of the Bangles). Also, take a look at that lead guitarist-- he looks an awful lot like Roger McGuinn, of the Byrds.

    Cinnamon Girl

    Comfortably Numb

    You Don't Own Me

    Expecting To Fly

Quick Correction-- I put the wrong song in post #2810, just now. Sorry for the miscue-- I'm not big into these oldies that retain a bit of the flavor of the 1950s-- but I had not been thinking about "You Don't Own Me," when I'd heard the refrain of Neil Young's piece. But you wanna know the real irony? The title of the song that didn't immediately come back to me, while listening to the Buffalo Springfield song, is sung by Dusty SPRINGFIELD!

Go back and listen to "Expecting To Fly," again-- you'll hear the similarity, this time.

Here's a real blast from the past. Yet this song, to me, is more than just nostalgia. I have a personal story from my life, associated with it; but I also think it's an all right song. That is, I like it, and believe I would, even if I had never heard of the Partridge Family.

But I guess I'll never know that, for sure.

Love Will Tear Us Apart-- The Swans (cover of song by Joy Division)

Here are the Swans doing a more subdued take on the song, with their female singer, instead.

The funny thing is that most of the Swans' "music" is very abstract Industrial minimalist, but the two songs that they do covers of, are good. Here is the other one: "Children of God." I think it's pretty intense.

The sound is a little different, in this one, from the video, directly above. It's a good song to listen to more than once, anyway, as it has a real meditative quality, like a mantra, to let fill your being, & carry you to ecstacy.
