So as to not leave us stranded on the shore, with the vampire/zombie Beach Boys (see my last entry), I will add on one more for this letter, which could be said, ties somewhat to nostalgia, as well-- though perhaps not old enough nostalgia for many of us-- in that it is by Ashley Tisdale (of numerous teen movies and television shows, in the 1990s). It will definitely change the mood, nurtured in my last several posts.

    Earth Angel-- The Penguins

Here is that Doo-Wop Classic, covered by the band leader, whose "Come September," I just posted: Billy Vaughn. It sounds pretty identical to the original, but this song is good enough, to hear twice:

This, btw, also falls into that same broad category, spanning numerous styles, into which I'd lumped Elvis Presley's "You Don't Have to Say...," along with a Humperdick song-- not to say that that he & Englebert sang in similar styles, but only that the songs had a certain general character, unlike many of Elvis's earlier, Rock & Roll tunes, in their sound. Let me try to make my meaning a little clearer, by bridging back to that Elvis song, here:

You found one of the exceptions-- even though this is not one that I would've thought of, on my own, it's a Rolling Stones song that's likable enough, to listen through to the end. It's a bit different from most of their other stuff (though I realize they have a pretty wide range of material, from their decades in the biz). To me, it has a bit more distinctively English folk flavor-- which I know is something you appreciate, from your many other posts, of Steely Span(?), and such-- as opposed to other folksy songs they do, that feel either more "American," or just less associated to a specific nationality, like "Wild Horses," for instance (which is also one of theirs that I like).

Here is a novelty type of entry for "G": the Golden Girls theme song. I don't generally watch the show (though it's decent enough), but I do find the theme, to be catchy.

In keeping with my preceding post about national flavors, I'll start off with a version that has a little bit of Country music twang to it:

Golden Girls theme ("Thank you for Being a Friend").

Let's make it a pair of "novelty" songs, to cover "G."

    Green Door-- Jim Lowe

    And a Cover Version:

During the refrains, in the cover, doesn't that singer's voice sound like Robert Plant? Anybody?

I'd Love To Change the World-- Ten Years After

EDIT: Is it me, or does it look like this kick ass song, was posted by Jason Stratham (in the little bubble, above)?

I'm only adding this identical version, because I wonder if anyone else here, has my reaction, to the cover picture. When I, now, look at that abundance of very tall grass-- I can't help thinking about all the
ticks that could be climbing on them.

    I Was Wrong-- Social Distortion

Since "I" has already been covered, this is a good place for me to add a second posting, for this "I" song, which I earlier posted (I'm pretty sure, but it's getting harder to be positive, as the thread goes on). For my first post, I'd used the official video, but this plain song version, sounds better than I remember the video being.

P.S.-- A search for "social distortion," under my name, comes up empty, so if it turns out I hadn't earlier posted a video, I reserve the right to use this song again, for "I"-- though that is one of those letters that already has more than its share of other options.

repeats are fine-several tunes I posted were later posted by others and I am sure I have repeated tunes-though often different versions.

with Clapton being the big star, and Duane Allman the other huge star (though he was only on a few of the tracks) Whitlock was not given much love over that brilliant album

As long as we have been citing a few Stones' songs, here's one that I like, about Valium, for "M."

    Mother's Little Helper

Here's a video, but in a "stereo" edit, so it will probably sound better, if you listen on headphones:

This is a little bit odd: I just got an alert, this morning, of @Mr. July's post for "M," which it says he made on Saturday. But it wasn't on my screen, before today. Maybe because he is a new member, it had to be reviewed, first? If so, Mr. July, you chose a fortuitous way to start: the one who runs the forum, who is a frequent poster to this thread, Falena, is also a big fan of Heart. Magic Man is, of course, a rock classic.

So, that was why I had posted my own song for "M"-- there's been nothing else there, at the time. I only explain this, because I am going to add what will, now, be a third song for "M," since I want to keep it close to the recent other postings of Byrds' songs, which I'd missed taking part in, at David Crosby's passing.

This is originally a Dylan song, but the Byrds' version, has become the standard.

    My Back Pages

Here we have a group of luminaries, singing the song: Dylan, McGuinn, Young, Harrison, Clapton, and Petty.

The Ramones covered this one, too:

The original is very nice, though, as well:

Happy journeys to David Crosby, through all the back pages, to come.

    O

When I was a kid, my "music" class was probably a lot like many of yours: we sang old songs from books, that were fairly lame, or at least became so, with redundancy. The only two songs that come to mind, from those years of singing, are "Mr. Frog Went A' Courting," and "SeƱor Don Gato." I'm sure we did other folk classics like, "My Darling Clementine," along probably with some of the newer, popular music, of Stephen Foster ("Oh Susanna!") and even possibly one or two, by Irving Berlin.

By the time we got to fifth grade, instead of being a joy, participating in the class made me self conscious, as it was not regarded as very "cool." But, as I've implied, the teacher did not make it very appealing; her name, with uncanny appropriateness, was Mrs
Eck. Use that name, also, for your visual.

I only recall one time, that she was absent, and it was a glorious experience. The substitute was fresh out of college. She carried an acoustic guitar with her, passed out xeroxed lyric sheets, and actually sat on top of a table, and played and sang the song, with lovely tone, so that I was rapt, and joined the sing along, without inhibition, as it was such a heartfelt rendering; a truly transporting experience. Unfortunately, Mrs. Eck had recovered, by our next music class (yes, I know-- a terrible thing to say).

The lyrics of this song, I still find moving because they are, sadly, so true to life.
