I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle.

A case worker at the Washington University Transgender Center at St.Louis Children's Hospital

The center’s working assumption was that the earlier you treat kids with gender dysphoria, the more anguish you can prevent later on. This premise was shared by the center’s doctors and therapists. Given their expertise, I assumed that abundant evidence backed this consensus.

During the four years I worked at the clinic as a case manager—I was responsible for patient intake and oversight—around a thousand distressed young people came through our doors. The majority of them received hormone prescriptions that can have life-altering consequences—including sterility.

I left the clinic in November of last year because I could no longer participate in what was happening there. By the time I departed, I was certain that the way the American medical system is treating these patients is the opposite of the promise we make to “do no harm.” Instead, we are permanently harming the vulnerable patients in our care.

Today I am speaking out. I am doing so knowing how toxic the public conversation is around this highly contentious issue—and the ways that my testimony might be misused. I am doing so knowing that I am putting myself at serious personal and professional risk.

Almost everyone in my life advised me to keep my head down. But I cannot in good conscience do so. Because what is happening to scores of children is far more important than my comfort. And what is happening to them is morally and medically appalling.

I think your 100% UN-RELATED TO THIS THREAD response may have backfired. You just named 3 people that do not support child bodily mutilation. Where are you going with this? What should happen to people who think they’re the wrong gender or gay? Mental ward? Prison? Public hanging?

 

They are free to do something about it when they are old enough to make major life changing decisions. Are we in the same thread? It seems this is aimed towards minors.
The real problem here is drugs. They make it seem so harmless. "no probs my man, we'll just put you on a little hormone regimen"
Pre-puberty that is effectively like surgery. Puberty also starts pretty early in some people so how do you handle that?
All of this confusion wouldn't be happening if men were portrayed like men without so much line blurring.

It's shocking how some people can post so much and contribute so little to threads.

This is actually a serious topic and you have lefties dismissing it because it makes their side look bad. We're talking about the treatment of children....a topic that should ignore politics. We have realized in society, since forever, that children are incapable of making many decisions about many things in life. This is why we have parental rights and parental control of things. This is why kids don't get jobs, drive cars until a certain age, etc. There are TONS of instances in which children are not permitted to do certain things because we KNOW they're not capable. So why on earth would anybody think they can make life altering medical decisions at such an early age? It's insane and goes against every ounce of research done on child development...yet here we are.
