Only seven meet their financial obligation...

You need to stop living and breathing "Orange Man Bad" and educate yourself.

Do you believe The United States should do the heavy lifting? Do you value the lives of United States troops that little?

That's BS. I don't believe he will abandon NATO but he will push them to get with the program. Freedom isn't free, never has been and the countries in question should be well aware of that fact. Maybe they need a bit of reality to prompt them to step up.

Note that Trump didn't just say he'd dishonor the treaty, but he would actually encourage Russia to attack.

"At Saturday’s rally in Conway, North Carolina, Trump said “one of the presidents of a big country” at one point asked him whether the US would still defend the country if they were invaded by Russia even if they “don’t pay.”

“No, I would not protect you,” Trump recalled telling that president. “In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. ”

They increased the budget by 12% this year without anyone threating to dishonor the treaty. And they have increased spending every year, especially after Ukraine happened. Making comments like that is beyond idiotic, and you know it.

As of now, 11 members have reached the goal, and 11 others are within 0.5% from it.

If the treaty has members which are openly admitting they can't be trusted, then the best thing might be to dissolve it. What's the point. If that happens, the US will have to ramp up spending big time

Should United States troops do most of the fighting and dying?

You speak of dishonor as if that describes what Trump is saying but it really describes what these deadbeat members have been doing for years. Only a credible force ready to meet aggression will prevent Russian adventurism. That doesn't mean America stands alone as a blocking force even though it may have been in the past.

He is the ONLY one who has threatened to not only dishonor the treaty but he also said he would encourage our enemies to attack our allies. As a matter of fact his comments are already encouraging it.

Nothing could possibly discredit that force more than comments like this.

Its almost as if he it trying to get Russia to attack a NATO country, but I guess Russia is best off waiting for him to win in Nov, which is like a green light for them

Wonderful. How does that change the fact that you lied and tried to claim Putin invaded Ukraine under Trump when that happened first under Obama then again under Biden? Maybe get your facts straight so people don't laugh at you?

If you want though, I guess, you can keep wearing that clown wig.

Trump is the only one who has tried to motivate the rest of the members to honor their obligation. Is that not a good thing?

Honor is a double edged sword and reneging on an obligation is dishonorable if we want to elevate this dispute to a holy war. It's political and Trump is a hard liner on the issue and doesn't think the US should stand alone. I think he's right because that is the whole premise of NATO, that we all stand together.

United States troops don't need to leave the US to die in a nuclear war between Russia and Europe.

Because that nuclear war will hit the US just the same.

"If Ukraine falls, so does Europe".... absolutely ridiculous. The Russian military is isn't worth spit. It is totally incompetent.

Trump can't find a reason for our tremendous investment in Ukraine. Neither can I.

They made commitments when they joined NATO. If they fail to live up to them they should be expelled.

I share your opinion about the state of the Russian military. Bunch of no-hopers.
But STILL not defeated because of Europe tip-toeing its way through this conflict. Still scared to poke the Russian (nuclear) bear.

European leaders keep saying Putin has started a war against Ukraine.
WRONG! He has started a war against Europe! (Ukraine being PART of Europe, you know!?)

Regardless of NATO membership; an attack upon a European country is an attack on the WHOLE of Europe. That is MY message.

Austria (in the CENTRE-SPOT of Europe!!) is not a NATO member. Maybe Putin will attack there next!
Are we gonna half-abandon Austria, and its couleur locale, like we are doing with Ukraine?!

    upload_2024-2-11_20-56-3.png

    Of course not!

So Europe NEEDS TO DO MUCH MORE to make Ukraine victorious. I don't know. More tanks, more planes, more ammunition. Send everything we got to Ukraine!!
Then we can overcome that half-baked Russian army.

You can't budget a war, like you do a movie.
'Oh sorry, no more money for ammunition!'

    Ridiculous!

I am still trying to identify something about Ukraine that makes it essential to American National security. For decades it was part of the USSR and no one placed any particular threat in that. It has no essential products (like Taiwan's microchips), it has no unique essential resources, nothing America can't do without. It got along fin without Ukraine for centuries.

I do not agree that an attack on Ukraine is an attack on all of Europe. What I just said about America not needing Ukraine is just as valid for France, Germany, UK and the rest.

The Russian military would have no chance of victory if they attacked a NATO country. The Russian leadership is incompetent. Russian tactics border on the absurd, and Russian capabilities can't even establish air superiority over the skies of Ukraine.

Yeah, well . . . sounds more like emphatic hyperbole; exaggeration to make a point. End result was that many NATO members increased their defense spending to coincide with their obligation under the NATO charter.

Sad that an ex POTUS will betray the country who made his POTUS and likely will again. Tragic not just sad.

It is dishonorable that a POTUS wants to betray our allies and his own country and in the open. The way to have NATO members “pay up”. is to deal with the issue behind closed doors and not hand a dangerous enemy like Putin a gift.

Everyone knows that Ukraine is not in NATO. The. problem started in 2014 when Obama was POTUS and told Ukraine not to respond militarily to the Crimea invasion. Of the Ukrainian military at that time was weaker than crap . Obama said the U.S. will do something. Obama did he sent helmets, blankets and MRIs.
