that study has been obliterated by this fact: from 1993 to 2023 the US has added over 200 million guns to the supply. Most of those are semi auto handguns rifles and shotguns. the overall violent crime rate and murder by gunshot has decreased in that 30 year period. and let's just cut the BS, crime control is not what motivates the avid gun banners anyway

why are you worrying about wounds when your reasons for wanting to ban guns in our country is not based on your faux concern for public safety?

 

If more guns = more gun crime, then more guns ALSO = more defensive gun use.

Assuming there's more 'good' people (law abiding citizens) than there are 'bad' people (criminals), that still ends up with the criminals outnumbered and either getting killed off or (more likely) deciding that violent crime is too dangerous of a 'profession'.

But its worth noting that gun-homicide studies tend to be woefully generic. If, for example, my home state of WA were included (and OR is the same), it would find a high rate of gun ownership and a high rate of per capita murders-by-shooting. However that data would be an inaccurate portrayal of the demographic dispersion. We have high population density with high murder rate and LOW gun ownership on the west side of the Cascade Mountain Range, vs low population density and low murder rate with HIGH gun ownership on the east side of the Cascade Mountain Range. A data snapshot of the entire state is not very useful information. Yet that's how many studies collate the data- by state, when it really needs to be more detailed by cultural region- rural vs urban, and that's difficult because most law enforcement reporting statistics include jurisdictions and span both rural and urban areas.

Look to who and what was answering - TD there is an ongoing myth that these weapons only produce small wounds of the kind seen in westerns. Small shoulder stain that the hero can ignore to fight on with. Not the two weeks later broken down mess that was once a body part.

It's not a 'Hollywood myth' that criminals tend to have the normal human instinct for self preservation, and its not 'wafting a gun around' that makes them fear for their life. Its the knowledge that people are more or less likely to be armed that has an overall deterrence effect on violent crime, as cited in DOJ surveys of incarcerated felons who reported more often deciding to avoid victims when those victims were more likely armed.

Thats not how it works at all. Defensive Gun Uses are not crime. Defensive Gun Uses tend to prevent crime. The level of violent crime does not increase with DGUs unless you're in a country that classifies self defense as a 'crime'...

 

gun shots like knife wounds are unpredictable. a AK round might punch right through someone while a 22 rimfire might bounce around. Same with knife wounds. you really cannot predict what will happen
