    Hmmm, I certainly respect his contribution to the craft but I've never been a real big fan (I've got an old vinyl record somewhere). Maybe I am breaking the Blues Law :)

    I certainly break the Blues Law when it comes to BB King though.
    Saw him live twice and walked out half way through the 2nd concert.
    Thin, crappy tone with the same old tired licks, and not a chord in sight!
    Never cared for his music or playing style.
    Cuff me officer ... :mrgreen:

    Enough of my negativity, this is meant to be about one's favourite guitarist:

    Dave Mustaine
    John Christ
    Dimebag Darrel

    A good friend of mine went his show here in Columbus on Sinclair Rd the night he was murdered. He was truly gifted.

    My favorite is a guy who in my lowly opinion is often overlooked and highly underrated. On the Rolling Stone list of "100 Greatest Guitarists" he's ranked at #40.

    He took a Gibson Les Paul guitar and a Kustom amp, and created an entirely new genre of rock music - swamp rock.

    For a too-brief period in the late 60's and early 70's he and his band turned out some songs that have become classic Americana, while other less known songs became staples of the AOR FM rock of the early 70's.

    Listen to his phenomenal guitar playing in songs like "Born on the Bayou", "I Heard It Thru The Grapevine", or one of my favorites - "Ramble Tamble".

    Forward this to about 1:30, and listen to the next four minutes. Listen to the way he makes his guitar howl - it's almost beyond comparison --

    John Fogerty - one of the best.

    I also have to give an honourable mention (because I doubt anyone else will!) to a much underrated guitarist (who most of you probably won't have heard of!), with an incredible ability to create memorable and tuneful solos - Steve Rothery from Marillion. His early work in particular with the band still stands as a masterclass in how to play melodic but understated guitar solos - he may not be technically the best, but that's not the point:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBOMjt_Nvq4"]Best of Steve Rothery solos - 83-84[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JU7Qc4Xgy4"]Best of Steve Rothey solos - 85-87[/ame]

    And this song is just astonishing, in no small part because of Steve Rothery's work, and especially the solo that kicks in at about 16:00, which is still one of the greatest guitar solos ever, in my humble opinion, despite it being a relatively simple thing (shame you don't see him play it on the video, but it's one of those rare instances when I can understand the video director focussing on the singer during a guitar solo!):

    Another hugely underrated guitarist by some, but definately one of my all time favorites:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boezt3HiT5g"]Badlands - Dreams in the Dark[/ame]

    Edited to add: He also gets extra points for the most obscenely gratuitous metal riff inserted into an otherwise 'nice' section of music of all time ever (about 50 seconds in - LOVE IT!!!!):
