You missed the remainder of the post, which demonstrated fully that Rushdie doesn't give a flying **** about fatwas and is living very well. As already mentioned, he understands what is going on and is very capable of influencing the masses should he choose to do so.

I disagree. Americans can be very patriotic, many really believe they rule the world and are deserving of more respect than any other country. It is a surprise and an affront to them and they are quite taken aback if other nationalities treat them as equals, as that is not how they see themselves. I think the collective mindset is that anything which threatens that country merits a good decimating. Had US Government not actioned that, I suspect it would have found itself out of a job.

Not that I take issue with hunting down the people who committed 9/11 and other terrorist atrocities. It has to be dealt with. I am no more inclined to let these fruitbats run free than anyone else and they certainly needed to see the consequences of their actions.
