A facebook page I follow has had a debate about a war between the UK and France, I think this debate is pointless as the UK and France will never go to war. The debate got alot of comments, most of which say the UK would win because it has Tomohawk missiles, better attack submarines, better fighter jets and a better MBT. Do you think this debate is pointless? If not who do you think would win this war between the UK and France?
Neither of them. They dont have the ability to ferry enough troops across the channel and keep them supplied.
Apart from the fact that - despite all the tory ranters - the EU has innoculated people against such insanity.
I think it is mainly because of the two world wars. Unless of course the Euros are just taking a breather.
Do you think the French with their aircraft carrier and 3 amphibious assault ships could take Gibraltar or Cyprus?
That would be a side show. The two sides would be able to sting each other a bit here and there, but they would pose no serious threat to each other. I am fairly certain you know what I mean.
They are both great powers. They are both Nuclear powers. An attack on/from either would potentially provoke a nuclear war that would end in worldwide devastation. The same rules apply to any other great/super power. Conventional war between developed nations is a thing of the past. Its the reason most nations do not have a huge naval force, Its not required in the modern world. 2 or 3 carriers are more than adequate.
Except that neither power has even close to the number of nuclear weapons required for worldwide devastation. Only Russia and the U.S. have that claim to fame.
What a ridiculous thread! I would like to see an army of Britons fighting an army of French with corncobs.
MAD would mean they wouldn't use nuclear weapons, and a nuclear attack on London would effect France, the same if the UK attacked Paris.
Nope, China has a relatively small nuclear arsenal with only a handful of ICBMs capable of reaching the other side of the planet.
With Laurel & Hardy on their side I see no way the French can lose. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi3ggH1s-sM
Beside the MAD doctrine is an option, not a certainty. With modern tracking system in place, the other nuclear powers may decide to not launch if nothing is coming their way.
People way overstate the likeliness that a nuclear war will break out if 2 nuclear nations attack each other. Why didn't the Germans use chemical weapons in WW2 when they were desparate and knew they were going to lose if they didn't do something drastic? Even if one country does get the upper hand and is about to take over the other in this situation, there is about a 0% chance of nuclear war happening.
That's not what game theory informs us and game theory has already been used in deciding nuclear strikes
