    Olympic 'sports' to drop:

    Trampolining
    Badminton
    Handball
    Water polo
    Beach volleyball
    Figure skating
    Synchronised swimming

If it were up to me I'd drop everything but the classic track and field events. Did you know that the IOC once seriously considered including ballroom dancing?

I have a hard time seeing this decision stand... but I'm pretty well shocked that wrestling would even be considered as something which could be axed. Like the Greek dude said in the OP article, "it's sacrilege"... blasphemous even! These evil heretics should be smitten!

Wrestling does not need to stay in the Olympics because violence impresses women. That is generally not true, and society has evolved from the days of roman gladiators so it is time to move on instead of grooming future generations into continuing the depreciation of society.

Violent combat like wrestling spreads an acceptance of violence in the general population, so kudos to the Olympics for removing this disease from the spotlight.

Motorcycle racing does not make the population more violent, so that is what is called a "straw man argument"

This is without a doubt one of the worst decisions made by the Olympics in modern history.

Its already been lost. The original olympics was not meant to be a spectator event. It was to be a test of each city states best champions. Now its partly that, and mostly advertising money.

I doubt this will stand. I wrestled for 10 years in school. Easily the most difficult sport. It can be a bit boring, especially at the Olympic level (not much scoring, pins, etc). But the Big Ten network televises a lot of college matches which are entertaining.

This is fallacious utilitarianism and shows a lack of understanding of both wrestling and liberty.

The whole point of liberty is to allow the individual to engage in risky or dangerous behaviour so long as one is not endangering others directly without their consent.

    1) most sports in the Olympics are more dangerous than wrestling

    2) Using utilitarianism ( based on the "supposed" collective good with no regard for individual rights) to claim that we should ban things based on a generalized claim of danger is fallacious because you have not shown why this is a collective good .. and goes completely against the bill of rights. (life liberty and pursuit of happiness)

Getting out of be in the morning s dangerous (you might fall down the stairs). Skiing, driving a car, sex, and eating fast food are "really dangerous"

We see these fallacious utilitarian arguments in use quite often these days .. both by the right and the left.

If we ban things on the basis of "danger or risk" without qualification then we end up banning all the things that make life worth living .

Well I certainly don't mind watching female volleyball, ice skating or swimming. :)

But I do think they could do away with curling.

Well if they went back to wrestling's roots and had them compete in the nude, it might regain it's popularity. I would also support bringing back the allowance of referees being able to whip competitors for infractions.

You guys are all wrong about why wrestling is perhaps being dropped. The problem is the judging over the past few Olympics has been plagued by scandal, bias and even decision swapping (I make sure your guy wins and you make sure my guy wins), This sounds like a last attempt to try to get the Wrestling Associations to clean up their act; if they don't do so, wrestling is gone.

Golf is more deserving than wrestling.
Nothing screams, Olympic athlete, quite like a golfer.

Wrestling is not particularly dangerous, I don't know where leftminority gets the idea that it is. Skiing is much more dangerous, would she have us eliminate thay also?

Sports today have been "romanized". In greek times, and until around the 1970's. Sports were mainly about the athletes and pure competition. Today they are about the highlights, the ads, and the TV audience watching those ads and highlights. They are a distraction really. Just as sporting events were a distraction in roman times.

In rome, athletics were used as a way for politicians and the wealthy to buy public favor, and distract them from the corruption and problems in the government. The needless wars, and the ridiculous habits of the emperors. They were about the audience, not the athletes.
High ranking gladiators and chariot racers were actually featured in murals advertising businesses and endorsing politicians, much like athletes today do!

John Daly's physique is not indicative of the vast majority of golfers on Tour.

And he won a gold medal when he was the underdog, and showed many young wrestlers perserverence pays.

You might want to hand in your man card if you prefer badminton, Sally.

He won a medal in a sport nobody cares about. Aagin: so what? Nobody cares.

I do not prefer badminton. If you managed to read that from my posts, you need your eyes checked or your head examined. As I have said, three times now: I have absolutely no interest in any sport in the Olympics. I would care not at all were the entire thing to be cancelled forever. I was THRILLED when I found out that the 2016 Olympics would not be in the US. I hope there is NEVER another Olympic Games in the United States.
