As our own planet has shown, life can be found in even the worst of places: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323415304578366310176789052.html

And, would you rely on NASA and the Federal Government to tell us, and thus everyone else, that they've discovered 'life' in space and on other planets?

I'm interested in reading these variables, because I can't see why humans couldn't evolve on another planet somewhere else in the universe.

You're over-generalising when you talk about the "Federal Government" telling us about life. I do trust NASA, as I trust the ESA and other such organisations around the world. In fact, science is a very open, trustworthy endeavour on the whole. Politics cannot really get in the way of the scientific method, although science can be used and abused by politicians (and private interests), much like other things are. Point is, government can't fake science. If information is withheld or statements unverifiable, that is no longer science and scientists would say as much.

Anyway, yes, life can exist in environments that seem very hostile to us. That's one reason the theoretical ocean of Europa is increasingly becoming interesting as a target for study by exobiologists. I was only saying that there is basically no chance whatsoever of human beings evolving twice, because we are the product of billions of years of evolution with uncounted generations of lifeforms leading from earth's first life to us. Things would have to happen basically the same way twice on another world - life starting out the same there as here, and mutation and selection producing the same genetic results over the same number of generations and years. It's just statistically impossible. That is not to say that there is not other intelligent life out there, but it's just not at all likely to be very much like us, at least inwardly.

It would be damned cool, though, if intelligent life did end up more or less humanoid in form simply as a function of convergent evolution.

As he began to explain what he was shown during his near death experience Christian Andreason asserted that the universe was full of life!!

There is a lot to that story and you may not have seen, or in particular, heard, the relevant part of the story. In fact there is an audio recording that he [Col. Halt] made during his encounter that describes this event as it occurred. He saw a fiery ball that was emitting what looked like sparks, not a tail as in your case, maneuvering through the woods. It came towards him as if it was acting intelligently and then directed a beam of light at his feet. At that point it took off. I don't think it moved phenomenally fast at this point but he did see such activity just after this.

So not identical, but we still have the same basic idea. You both describe a fiery ball that acted intelligently and approached you directly. The are many similar reports of encounters with fiery balls that have even followed people in cars down roads and highways. I talked with one man who said he saw it coming at him while he was riding his motorcycle and then he lost consciousness. A short time later he awoke on the ground, luckily not too badly injured from his crash while unconscious. Anyway, what you describe is part of a class of reports that have similar essential features.

It may be that advanced life forms will tend to have similar features.

From there you have to enter the Twilight Zone, but the fact is that reports of these encounters go back perhaps 10,000 years or more, depending on what you consider to be a report. If this reality beyond imagination is true, then we have to accept that we may somehow be connected to them, and that's why we hear reports of beings with humanoid features.

Perhaps the most radical idea of all is one that is really not less likely than the notion of advanced beings having superluminal modes of travel. A ship capable of traveling faster than light would be, we believe, by definition, a time machine as well. Traveling faster than light and time traveling are essentially the same thing. So one has to consider the possibility, were we to entertain the notion that we really have been visited, that we are being visited by highly advanced humans from our distant future.

Not a theory or a belief, just a consequence of the facts, were we being visited and the stories are true!

What do you base that analysis on? Based on sheer numbers, and my hypothesis (which is that wherever life can evolve, it does), I personally feel the universe is downright teeming with life. Whether or not any are traveling here is a different conversation.

I would add that this solves the problems of how they found us, why they're interested, how they got here, and why they reportedly look humanoid. We conjecture about the possibility of a race of beings, perhaps as much as a billion years more advanced than us, that come here in FTL ships. But we don't typically consider that the race of beings a million or a billion years more advanced, could still be us!

It is actually a nicer logical fit than aliens from Beta Reticuli

There is a famous quote, I forget the original source, perhaps it was Bohr, but the question was: If time travel is ever going to be possible, then where are the time travelers? Well... I know of one remotely possible answer to that question!

If superluminal (I like that term) travel did end up functioning as a way to travel backwards in time as well, then I imagine that trips could even be planned and engineered in such a way that the aliens leave, arrive at earth and return home precisely when they wish to. That would be a very handy tool indeed, especially if it could actually overcome time dilation to where they could avoid having thousands, millions or whatever ridiculously large number of years pass by on the homeworld (and on Earth) while they're traveling.

We actually have better working models for time machines, than we do FTL ships. In principle we know how to make any of I think several different types of time machines. But the energy requirements are far too great - they require an entire sun, or and things like a black hole or super exotic materials to play with, things that will never be possible in the foreseeable future, if ever. But on paper, we already understand a good deal of the physics. We don't really KNOW if they would work but the door isn't closed on the possibility in the highest ivory towers of physics. So given a million years, who knows?

There was a lady named Bright
Who could travel much faster than light
She set out one day in a Relative way
    And returned the previous night!

Astronaut Gordon Cooper claims two encounters with UFOs, one of which landed at Edwards AFB while he was in charge of flight testing there.

One other interesting tidbit about time travel. Given a means of traveling backwards in time, perhaps through the use a local black hole, or perhaps by creating a wormhole, we already know how to return to the future from whence we came. Whereas we need General Relativity to manage backwards time travel [if possible], we only need Special Relativity for travel to the future. Simply get in spaceship and travel as near the speed of light as you wish to slow down your clocks relative the those on planet earth. You can return to any point in time in the future that you wish, be it your point of origin or a million years more into the future. This is already well established physics that we know works. It has been tested and verified many billions of times in laboratories - every time they accelerate a particle to very high velocities. It has also been tested with atomic clocks and aircrafts.

    As for wormhole time travel

As a brief response to the threat's subject, I reckon many planets support life and that at least several within our own galaxy have, or at some point in the past harbored, species comparable to or superior in their mental faculties relative to humanity. There is very little doubt in my mind when it comes to this. Out of the more than 200 billion stars in the Milky Way alone - not to mention those in a similarly staggering number of other galaxies - it just cannot be that ours has a large rock in orbit that is exceptionally suitable in terms of its environs giving rise to a rich biosphere and advanced forms of life compared to all the others. It seems like common sense to me that there would be a breathtakingly vast number of alien species out there, and that compared to a number of them we would seem primitive and perhaps quite insignificant.

That having been said, I must express great skepticism toward claims of extraterrestrial visitations being the subject of government conspiracies. I feel inclined to ask several questions.

    - How likely is it really that life on Earth has been detected by distant civilizations?
    - If it has, how likely is it those civilizations to have any knowledge of our species?
    - If they do, how likely are they to care enough about us to come visit our planet?
    - If they do, how likely are they to have practical, affordable means of visiting us?
    - If they do, how likely are they to have technology that can mask their approach?
    - If they do, how likely are they to be noticed by humanity when they are visiting?
    - If they have, how likely is it for a government or governments to know but not us?
    - If it is so, how likely is it that they would want to (or even could) keep it a secret?
    - If they have, how likely is it no compelling proof would be revealed by anybody?
    - Otherwise, how likely are other civilizations to often visit us to conduct research?

I'm not saying it is impossible, but c'mon. One would at least expect documentation and other physical evidence to arise following the collapse of the Soviet Union or for information to leak from sources in LDCs - after all, how likely is it that only the U.S. government and perhaps some of its key strategic allies possess such knowledge but not several others... whether through espionage, experiences within their own borders, or being informed by our leaders in private to mitigate the risk of other countries screwing up whatever attempts may be in progress to conduct research, communicate with the species, and engage in diplomacy?

For the time being, I reckon we have either never been visited before or - at the very most - that visitations are extremely rare and so discreet that they go completely undetected by us. In the latter case, I do not see why there would be any strong interest in sticking around or meddling in the affairs of our species. There are plenty of resources to be found elsewhere, and what would there be to gain from making contact with governments but not other people as well? Do you reckon I am missing the mark here, or does a lot of this sound pretty reasonable to ya'll?

I offer my apologies in advance, incidentally, if I've skipped past any pertinent posts in this thread before adding my own thoughts. There are many pages of replies here - too many for me to set aside enough time to read and digest right now. :)

Even we now are learning to detect earthlike planets and are making great efforts to do so

Evidence for life would be apparent by considering the make up of our atmosphere.

We have people rallying to go to Mars with no direct evidence for any life at all.

We have no way to answer that question. What are the odds that science is possible that we can't even imagine? If it is possible, the odds may be quite high that any sufficiently advanced race will discover it. If it is not possible, then there is no chance. So the chances are either something as high as nearly 100%, or 0%. That doesn't help much.

We are lucky if we can detect large asteroids approaching. What do you expect, fireworks?

That depends entirely on how they conduct themselves. If the stories are to be believed, they don't seem to care much if they are occasionally observed.

How likely is it that highly classified information exists? Really?

What secret? If true, it has hardly been kept a secret.

Nothing less than a body or a part of a spacecraft would be compelling proof. Why would you expect something like that would accidently get away?

We have no way to know given that we can only imagine the technology that would make visitations possible. The odds could be anywhere between 0% to nearly 100%.

And what sort of evidence would not be immediately dismissed as fraud? Do you really think documents would prove anything. Have you read the alleged MAJESTIC documents?

You would suppose the intentions of an alien perhaps a million years or more advanced that us? Why in the world would you think you can anticipate the motives of an alien?

My answer is: Hey everybody, let's put a bunch of flickering neon signs all over our stealth fighters to show off how awesome they are!

I have often wondered why a being with the ability to travel billion of miles, explore interstellar space, and decide to visit another species would drive around with the headlights on....unless it wanted to be seen.

In France, the Institute of Higher Studies for National Defense and a committee of highly respected experts and analysts, produced a report on UFOs, commonly referred to as the COMETA report:

One interesting case is the Travis Walton case, which was the basis of the movie, Fire in the Sky. What makes this case unique and especially compelling is that five witnesses, while being investigated during a possible murder investigation, all passed a lie detector test in which they confirmed that they saw Travis Walton lifted from the ground by a beam of light produced by a UFO, which threw him back approximately ten feet. The men claimed that at the time they thought he was dead and they fled the scene in fear for their lives. Walton then disappeared, which is why murder was suspected. He reappeared five days later, was allegedly highly traumatized, and claimed he had indeed been abducted by aliens and the men's story was true.

Note that according to the police investigator, these men were telling the truth.

The original CIA report for this should still be available at the CIA, Freedom of Information website. Search UFO and see the documents dated 10/1, and 10/20/55

I would love to see the data (proof), as this is pretty amazing to me. If you could provide it I would appreciate it, as everything I have seen to debunk it is rather weak.

If you UFO conspiracty theorists would just stick to real UFO's that don't come from outer space or the dark side of the moon, we normal people would be happy to discuss the subject. But we know that's now what you fukkers are on about. You want to get into the twilight zone sh!t and you go and spoil the conversation.

So stop your complaining that you aren't getting any attention and get on with it. That way it's over sooner and we don't have to be bothered with the stupid crap anymore.
