Apparently it was just a bluff.....or a "show" for the NRA....or something. But not really serious.

Numerous Republicans said Tuesday they won’t vote to block gun control legislation from reaching the floor, making Senate Democrats increasingly optimistic that they’ll have the necessary votes to begin debating their bill, even though final passage remains uncertain.

Early in the day, Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) told CBS he won’t filibuster the bill.

In the Capitol, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) reaffirmed that they’ll vote to begin debate on the bill. Sen. Tom Coburn told TPM he’ll also vote for the motion to proceed to debate. Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Dean Heller (R-NV) and Susan Collins (R-ME) similarly told reporters they won’t filibuster debate on the legislation.

“I do not understand — it’s incomprehensible to me that we would not move forward with debate and amendments on an issue this important to the American people,” said McCain.

“My hope is that we can have a full and open debate with amendments, and if that occurs then I will certainly vote to proceed,” said Collins.

The House will kill this bill so the Senate is just wasting its time.

    That could be encouraging!

The GOP would rather play the filibuster game by hiding behind a procedural vote.

That clearly isn't washing with the electorate.

It looks like they may be trapped into having to vote in the open for or against something 90% of Americans want.

You plainly don't know what you're talking about. TPM's talking heads do not run the Senate. They are just playing a game trying to force the conservative republicans to cave.

You people do this all the time.

Where are you getting your numbers?
The Huffington Post, MSNBC and the NYT are not sufficient responses.

As usual, it's all about politics. Ried has no more interest of gun control passing than the GOP. There are a number of dems in red districts that are up for tough re-election bids, and he wants to hold on to the senate. A renewed assault weapons ban had no chance in hell of being signed into law, and I highly doubt universal background checks will make it either.

New poll shows 91-8% support for background checks. Can the NRA show that kind of support in a poll???

The incident wherein the newspaper published the names and addresses of registered owners of firearms shows the dangers of background checks and registration. I do not see how the government has a right to put limitations on a Constitutional right. Do you?

90% of Americans dont want to have to figure out how to do a "background" check for a father to give a son a gun no.

Quinnipac is a bunch of garbage and you know it. They consistently skew to the left by 15 points. and then modify the sample.

The founders had cannons in their front yards. There should be NO restrictions.

1711 is not 300 million. Talk about a small sample size that and " Americans also say those checks could lead to confiscation of legal guns, 48-38 percent, the poll said."

So if you believe this poll 48% of Americans think Obama is lying about confiscation.

No restrictions whatsoever? Do we really need devastating military grade explosives to fulfill our duty as a well regulated militia? That is an insane position and one very few people pro-gun or not would support.

Support for gun control is shallow, but opposition to gun control runs deep. Gun owners care a lot about these issues, and will vote on it.

What's insane is to disarm in the face of a government that has shown proof positive that it will confiscate your property and kill you for dissent.
They took peoples gold in the 30's
They took peoples right to automatic weapons in the 60's.
They killed the Weavers at Ruby Ridge for NOTHING!
They confiscate property to build Habitat for Humanity housing.
They took peoples bonds and gave them to the unions at GM WITHOUT due process.

Do not lecture about what is insane you leftist nazi apologist
The last time the people gave up their guns they were taken to Auschwitz.

    Will this do?

    "
Ninety percent of Americans and 74 percent of National Rifle Association members support universal background checks, Leffingwell said, the Austin American-Statesman reported in a news article posted online the day he spoke, March 28, 2013."

    Probably referring to this:

"To date, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has prevented nearly 1.8 million criminals and other prohibited purchasers from buying guns. The law also has a deterrent effect—prohibited purchasers are less likely to try to buy guns when they know comprehensive background check requirements are in place.

Unfortunately, current federal law requires criminal background checks only for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for just 60% of all gun sales in the United States. A loophole in the law allows individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork. That means that two out of every five guns sold in the United States change hands without a background check. "
