No..Australia..drama this week because some idiot Senator wants the burka banned in Parliament as a security issue. The compromise at the moment is for muslim women wearing face coverings to be segregated behind a glass petition normally reserved for school children attending Parliament. Personally I think the burka should be banned in Australia as being oppressive to women. Of course muslim women wont admit this, they'll just wear it and say its required by religion/tradition...they wouldn't bring dishonour on the family by saying "oh, my husband insists I wear it".....burka/niqab I sense you're a muslim so I dont expect you to agree with anything I say...
This 'burka' is only when women go out not inside their houses, so it has nothing to do with kids not seeing their mother's face. Most of the religious customs, including 'burka' is added to religious customs for political gains not for religion. At the end religion is also politics.
To date, no women in said garment HAS been in Parliament House so why the fuss? A diversion from the absolutely (*)(*)(*)(*)house job the goverment is doing? Worst government in history, appalling, cretinous gits.
No ... I am Episcopalian.. I just spent many years in the ME and I know a bit about their culture, traditions and religion.
Thanks, yes, I knew that. The kids probably glean 2 different kinds of mothers though: the robed and disrobed one. Interesting what a young child would make of such a garment.
That is an honest aspect and does deserve a bravo. Yes, it would be lovely if we could hear from those women themselves. But don't you wonder why we hardly ever will or do? To me it (the Islam) often looks like a world, where us Westerners is not offered a lot of insight..... I would love more exchange, because what we don't know, we don't trust.... Regards
I have heard from the women themselves.... I was very lucky to have personal contact with the Al Nadha philanthropic society Riyadh.. They are an interesting group .. very involved in continuing education for women, business development for women, historic preservation, publishing, cripple children's services and so on.. The Abaya is their culture and tradition... it is not inflicted on them.
Hi Margot, thank you very much, I am very happy to receive personal expiriences, they are highly sought after. I value them higher then all the information on our web. I am also happy that your expiriences are different to mine, it makes me hope...... Cheers again
Well I think thats the end of this thread...burkas will remain in Australia, and although I would love to hear from muslim women about their views on the burka/niqab, I feel that any comments made by muslim women will be controlled by their husbands...after all, if any muslim women spoke against the burka/niqab, it would bring dishonour on the family.... Anyway...Im sure their laughter, joy and exciting life style will stand them in good stead... ...(the women, I meant)....
Maybe we have to remain positive, despite the dislike, which I also found myself in, depending on the situation. See Margot's answer above, it can be either way....... Regards
You seem to think that Arab women have no voice.. They do... always have.. They call it petticoat politics.
I remember seeing a little individual wearing one of these black burka/niqab head-to-toe things on a 44 degree stinking hot day. Anyone trying to tell me that women voluntarily wanted to wear that oppressive garment or wasn't religiously brain-washed into wearing it - is an idiot.
Some people call it oppressive and others call it modesty. To say that the Burka should be banned because it oppresses women while they live in a free society is stupid. Women are muslims too. And some Muslim women interpet the Koran to say Burkas should be worn. Its obviously a cultural tradition built from the foundation of their religion. Next we will be telling Pentalcostal women that they can't wear long dresses and long sleeves because its "oppressive". Oh, then its the Amish---show me in the Bible where women have to wear plain clothes and a cap. True Oppression is stating that women in a free society aren't able to think for themselves----thereby allowing government to oppress its beliefs upon them.
I wish Abbott would wear a Burka rather than going out in public in his budgie smugglers all the time.
I think that is the whole problem, for most Westeners, not being Muslims: the burqa reflects oppression on women by their religion/men. It is even harder to believe that if their men or spiritals leaders would object the burqa that the burqa would still be worn.... In the western world we had women freeing themselves from old patterns of the Christian society beginning at the 1960s with the sexual revolution, being fully equal today, at least for me. But I am aware that the Christian church is still lacking behind, but way ahead compared to the Islam. I miss this bit in the Muslim world, but I guess there are millions of reasons against, depending on your belief... But as others have mentioned here, maybe I need to become more tolerant. That is the hard bit if you believe in progress... Cheerio
They are not criminals. There are many women who are forced to wear a Burka. Those who wear it voluntarily want to make visible that they are women of honour (means kind of protection of a husband or a father) in opposition to the women who go without a Burka. Its interesting that you argue you want to make prostitution illegal, because you think even women who do it voluntarily do a damage to themselves society should not accept just like suicide or else. But here you protect the right to wear a Burka. Maybe you should make an experiment and go in a Burka just for one day.
Why are you making comparisons between wearing a burqu to prostitution? That's bizarre. I've never 'argued' I want to make prostitution illegal. I've said I don't like it and given reasons why. You are making generalisation about the burqa. It goes deeper than your generalisations. All I know with certainty is that the debate in this country (negativity towards burqa) is promoting / encouraging racist attacks on Muslim women. Not on.
Why dont you answer the question instead of avoiding it with another question... - - - Updated - - - Muslim men and women dont even enter a mosque through the same door....they are segregated into another room for their prayers...thats oppression, not tradition... - - - Updated - - - And they are.......
Orthodox Jews worship with men and women separated. Coptic and Eastern Orthodox Churches do it as well. It was common in the History of the Catholic Church. Do you need more?
But in the end it is clear that Jews, like muslims, scorn women. And like Muslims, they are patronizing and try to tell women that men not wanting to be near them is a good thing.
I was thinking the same thing. He talks like he knows what it is to wear a burqa. There's quite a bit of 'projection' going on, methinks.
