An entire generation...this is all I see them do.

At their desk, walking to their car, at lunch...this is it. I can't imagine any of them running their own business, I would define them not so much as "snowflakes" but as the "distracted" generation for sure.

Small businesses opportunities abound, depending upon what you want to accomplish...If you are just looking for extra income, it is easy....If you are looking for the next million or billion dollar franchise, then yeah that is difficult. The problem is most people want instant results without the hard work. It's like the old saying, "anything that comes easy, isn't worth having"!

And if you do manage to become successful government wants a big chunk of the profit. After taking a lot of risk, borrowing money, working day and night, wearing all the different hats, when I heard Obama and Liz Warren say "you didn't build that", t wanted to put my fist through the TV. Those a** don't know the first thing about business.

Obama and Liz Warren are Ignoramuses

I'm middle class and I did it only to find out that Democrats and liberals thought I was rich. The government money grab is a kick in the stomach and then in the ass.

People also have to be good with money. Money flows out and hopefully in but you have to keep your books to know if you are actually making money. Running a business is not for the weak minded.

Yes, some people are lazy. Some are stupid. Some are weak. Some are ugly. Some are slow. Some are fat. Some are evil.

What purpose does it serve to demonize and generalize? Are you wanting to discuss the start-up climate or just insult people?

There can only be so many businesses, as the market demands.

No they would not they don't sell freaking lemonade. That part about the 260 days app;lies to every fast food franchise in existence Your lemonade stand is way down their list of priorities their worried about Burger King and Carls Junior, and the other big boys that 50 to a 100 glasses of lemonade that your selling a month and barely breaking even on means nothing to somebody sells a billion burgers a year. But to some petty minded unaccountable petty fogger petty fogger it's a chance to show whose really in charge hear and a chance for the city to make another hundred bucks on a food distribution license.

Yes, what purpose did it serve to demonize business owners. ahhhh, yes, to gain your support to raise taxes on them then wonder why the economy and your paychecks have grown at a snails pace.

And today in many regions, with rising costs of living, this simply is not a viable option anymore. The nostalgic "do it yourself" America that may have once existed is now gone.

One of the big reasons for the increased cost of living is rising costs of land and housing shortages, but there are various other reasons as well.
When population grows, the old building space isn't enough anymore and new buildings have to be constructed. This drives up the cost for everyone trying to buy or rent.

I don't recall ever saying "everyone" could start much less run a business. Only people who can think outside the box of can consider it. But seriously, you should give Obama or Liz Warren a ring, they can help you build that.

to run your own business it takes all your time to get the business started...long long hours...i would start at 4 am and work until 8 or 9 at night non stop for years...six days a week...it was tough but worth it in the end...you will end up doing the work of about 3 or 4 people just to keep the business going

The middle class goes to school to learn to work for someone else. Start looking for an opportunity. Take the skills you have as an employee and turn those into a contract services business.

There's only so many products, that can be sold out of so many stores, to so many people.

    Duh.

You simply can't have a business for every person, there's simply not enough demand in the market.

    Duh.

Stating the intellectually obvious must mean I'm Obama supporter?

    Wow, just wow.

So it's not a viable option for most Americans.

    Great.

Why are we talking about it then?

And for all that 4 out of 5 businesses don't last 5 years

Yep, I did it. I went to my w2 income job at night, came home and worked at my business eventually phasing out my job. No family or social life, and very little sleep.

I was director, customer care, CFO, accountant. I was finally able to hire people (experts). It was worth it but I still felt like spitting on the TV when Obama and Liz Warren said "you didn't build that". They didn't have a clue what it took and takes.

I started my business with a total of $1500 in debt. I buy tools as I need them, I rent the tools that I used infrequently and I drive a 20 year old truck that's in good shape. I don't carry employees, but use white guys that I know as I need them. I was profitable from day one.

I sell plants and the first thing Iearned was not to sell anywhere near a Wal Mart. They will sell under cost just to put a little guy like me under. At the time we were lucky to bring in a hundred dollars on a good day. Being small we were mobile. For an example a greenhouse complex opened near a local Wal Mart and Lowes. I have been buying stock from both because I. can't grow plants that cheap. I just take advantage. The other stores seldom lower their prices on the same plants. This is a fact learned from experience.
