Prof. Stephen Cohen is the US's foremost expert on Russia. Had Washington asked him for advice right from the start, instead of the arrogant idiots in the government, the world wouldn't be facing annihilation.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin, which watches closely as these narratives unfold politically in Washington, has become deeply alarmed, resorting to its own fraught words. The No. 2 leader, Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, declared that US-Russian relations have been “ruined,” a statement Cohen does not recall any previous Soviet or post-Soviet leader ever having made.

Medvedev added that the two nuclear superpowers are at “the brink” of war. Considering that Medvedev is regarded as the leading pro-Western figure in Putin’s inner circle, imagine what the other side—state patriots, or nationalists, as they are called—is telling Putin. Still more, the Kremlin is saying that Trump’s missile attack on Syria crossed Russia’s “red lines,” with all the warfare implications that term has in Washington as well.

And flatly declaring the mysterious use of chemical weapons in Syria a “provocation,” Putin himself warned that forces in Washington were planning more such “provocations” and military strikes. In short, while the Kremlin does not want and will not start a war with the United States, it is preparing for the possibility.

Whoever convinced Trump that that airstrip attack was a good idea is a traitor to the American people. It served zero purpose. It's a stupid dangerous game

Please settle down about war with Russia its not going to happen. Putins comments were purely to let us know they didn't like it. They had to say something. Stupid experts just like to hear themselves talk

Trump has the wrong advisors and he should have stuck to his previous beliefs in regards to foreign policy, for they were intelligence based beliefs and principles. The pressure must have been tremendous to do what he did given this is a repeat of the ruse to draw the US in more than we were already involved with the covert war we have been in in regards to Syria. To ramp up tensions with Russia is the height of neocon stupidity and arrogance. Of course this trump and putin collusion ruse plays into this and besides being used for pure partisan dirty politics it has also been used to limit how trump can deal with Russia, for if he had not taken the flip flop position he has currently taken MSM and the neocons in both parties would be screaming this is proof trump and putin colluded during the election. I said early on that MSM and DC neocons were taking away his ability to lessen tension with Russia, and once again I predicted of the difficulty this ruse would create for trump in normalizing relations with another nuclear power comparable to us.

In so far as a nuclear war being off the table, this was much more true during the Cold War with the USSR, for we had responsible actors in DC, but it has become very clear this is no longer the case at all. We have come very close in years past with nuclear war from simple mistakes and confusion and these are public record. During the cold war the USSR was seen as an enemy due to the communist revolution, and its expansion, but DC, our leaders respected the USSR and were responsible actors. That is just not the case anymore as illustrated by Graham when he said last week on FOX when asked about our interference in Syria might get us into war with Russia, this crazy bastard said, 'bring it on" This is the attitude we see today. And the people that voted this man back into office will send him and McCain back again, showing us how crazy our own voters are.

The authorised attack on the Syrian airfield was absolutely a mistake, however I don't think it was a big enough mistake to warrant US-RUS Relations being ruined. At the time, supplied with the evidence he had, President Trump made the decision to informally set a punishment for Assad on his alleged use of chemical weapons, in the form of a precise, quick and simple strike against a Syrian Air Force air strip.

Whether or not this attack was effective, who knows. It is certainly a possibility that Trump got his info wrong and it wasn't Assad that commited these acts - especially with the suspicious white helmets - but then again, mistakes happen. Or perhaps this is part of an advised deep state plan for war with Syria

Of course you would say that, but as always it is an uneducated opinion. I guess Ray McGovern who was the CIA Russian specialist for 30 years works for Russia too. Any one who disagrees with neocon war mongers works for Putin. ha ha Check under your bed, for Russians.

They been tested but somehow only a cold shoulder was made as a means of retaliation from the Russians. But, it's anticipated, would Russia sacrifice itself just to defend a war torn country like Syria? I could say the bluffing already became a passé.

Nothing really uneducated about it, he goes out his way to somehow embellish the Russians.

Russia is paranoid enough that all this negative talk about Russia is truly irresponsible--and particularly so when done by those trying to replace many of us with Muslims.

I listened to several interviews with him and saw nothing but the way we thought during the cold war with the old USSR, which was in a much more sane manner, a more responsible manner. You hear the same opinions from VIPS, a group of retired intel men, which includes McGovern and Binney. These men represent the way we dealt with the USSR, instead of the irresponsible nuts we see today, the neocons who seem to think MAD no longer exists. I see these people as Berserkers, unfit to hold any office and a clear and present danger to humanity and should be hung every damn one of them. They are even madder than Adolf Hitler, even more insane.

Aren't the Trump advisors split between Born Again Neocons vs Trump Traditionalist.
The Trump Traditionalist are losing, the Neocons are winning and Trump gains popularity.
That is my take. I am a Trump Traditionalist who feels betrayed. Just like Hope & Change.
    Same ole, same ole.

Scary, what this guy has done in less than 3 months. Will he be restarting the military draft soon?

It has been reported that Ivanka was behind the recent airstrike in Syria, rather than the existing power machine in Washington as Medvedev wrongly guessed. Dmitri Medvedev made that comment before he knew it, presuming that there was a complete reversal of the administration's stance on Syria, thus contradicting Trump's election promises. Trump spared a couple of cruise missiles for his daughter who was horrified to see these Syrian children in the aftermath of the gas attack.

When the kids at school are told by their principal over the PA system that if they are sent home early then they should go home immediately and not dawdle or go elsewhere, then you know there's trouble. October 1962 that happened at my high school.

Maybe not by an outright declaration, but more likely by accident, viz. a mix of machismo and jingoistic brinkmanship (no prize for guessing which country that applies to, but it isn't Russia), and the west won't have the wit to stop it.

I don't know, but I do know of a country which is assisting a dictator by ridding the world of the scourge of radical Islam, and it isn't the USA?? Do you know which one I mean?

The entirely relationship between Russia and the West is ruined at least for three generations. It is impossible to imagine that Russians will trust western policymakers earlier as in fifty years. But we all know that most of Western countries will became caliphates withing a couple of decades. That's mind that in reality Russia will good deal only with heads of German, French or Canadian caliphs and relationship with the West is broken for ever.

If you mind Crimea that Ukraine in reality stole it from Russia after 1991.

Assad is in this mess and being demonized because he refused to allow a gas pipeline from Qatar to cut into Russia's profits. Other than that, Moscow is dependent on the Shia crescent running from Syria to Iran. They need them to keep the extremist terrorists in the Gulf, away from the more moderate Sunnis in the Caucasus and Central Asian States.

It was these terrorists supported by the CIA, that caused the wars in Chechnya. Washington wanted to ruin Russia's pipelines running from the Caspian Sea, so the oil could go through Turkey instead.

Because of this, Russia sees the war onAssad as an attack on itself... as does China for its own geo political and economic reasons. There is no way that Russia will ever desert Syria, or Syria Russia. Anyone who thinks so has to be delusional.
