More. We need to update and upgrade our military equipment and that costs money. We need to stockpile more munitions including the MOABs. Doing this before we actually need them is better than trying to catch up while we have to use them. Peacetime defense is just as important as wartime actions.

So, as much money as 8 of the next biggest spenders isn't enough? What about 8.1 of the next biggest spenders? Will that do the trick? Just trying to understand.

This string brings back some old and ugly memories.

    I was a Democrat when I enlisted in 1965. I was a Republican when I got out in 1969.

I enlisted for two reasons - first, it was my patriotic duty and second (tongue in cheek) if I didn't enlist I would have been drafted.

LBJ worked hard to get the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed in 1964 - this was the start of Vietnam although the buildup really didn't start until mid-65

I was sent over in 1966 - There were a lot of good things and some very bad things I found in Vietnam - but it was my return to "the world" that caused me the most anguish and pain as I was ostracized from many people because of their attitude toward me as a Vietnam Veteran. I was looked at as a drug crazed loonie ready to go postal at any moment. I had to hide the fact that I was ever in the military, let alone being a Vietnam Veteran. The people who did this were Democrats - the news media that fostered this thinking favored Democrats.

When the movie "First Blood" came out, I must have watched it ten times - it was like taking a shower after wading through muck and filth.

Violent death leaves its mark on a person - its bad enough when you suffer the trauma's from war, but to have your own people turn their backs on you - it leaves its mark in depression and despair. The Democrats were the direct cause of the mental illness suffered by many vets way back when - and yes - I was one of them

You are comparing a broken toe to parents who have lost their child.
    No more words are needed.

I sincerely thank you for your service, and I hope you are finally finding the support you need. Although it certainly is too little too late.
I posted an interesting bit of history about the Vietnam era here:
    http://politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/a-history-of-the-left-and-david-horowitz.517072/

David Horowitz, who was one of those active anti-war protestors and an abuse-the-vets activist wrote this about their thinking at the time:
I think the Vietnam Vets were terribly treated by so many on the left - those in your war have suffered more than any returning soldier in history, I believe. It deeply pains me.

As much as we feel is necessary. Military might is, unfortunately, important in this world. You do NOT want to be weak. Human beings are not that great and have been known to take advantage of weaknesses, either perceived or real.

Your story is pretty much the same as mine but mine was from 1970 to 1974 and the difference was I came home to Arkansas where there wasn't any of the anti war leftists hippies. Changing planes in LA was very eye opening for me though. It was so bad in the news back then even though I didn't get the reception some did in my home state there was no hero's welcome. Even today when people find out I served and they say thank you for your service I don't know how to react.

We already spend more than the next 8 biggest spenders combined. How is that being weak?

David Horowitz didn't represent the anti-war movement.. We didn't want communism, we wanted an end to the war and the soldiers to come home.

From 1956 to 1975 Horowitz was a "liberal progressive" of the New Left. He's also Jewish and now ultra conservative.

David Horowitz earns his living today as a hate monger..... not unlike democrat turned republican Joseph McCarthy

"Even today when people find out I served and they say thank you for your service I don't know how to react"

Ditto - I'm usually surprised, but I do appreciate the gesture. I do make sure, when I see another Vietnam Vet that I tell him "Welcome home brother"

Some of the anti war crowd were communists like David Horowitz, but most just wanted the war ended and the boys brought home.

The widow to whom Trump made the celebrated call has spoken. Her statement has the credibility that those with obvious political agendas lacks.

Some say she deserved better, and some say she didn't.

I don't think her personal impression was influenced by Trump's maligning American POWs, his abusive remarks toward others who lost a loved one while serving America, or his flimsy pretexts to avoid military service. Under the circumstances, I doubt if she was in any state of mind to indulge ulterior motives.

I can answer you just won't accept the answer. The answer is however much it takes to do what needs to be done.

That's a non-answer. That's the same as me saying in a research grant application when they ask me about the budget: "However much it takes to do what needs to be done". Do you think someone would give money to my lab if I said that?

But, politicians tend to be vague. Maybe you would make a good politician.

Jake, Thank you for your son's service. My son returned from the M.E. last week. I hear about all of these gold star parents and parents of injured soldiers and I feel guilty. I know I shouldn't, but I can't help it. I hope your son finds peace and is able to gather up his skills and have a fulfilling, productive life.

The thing is, I don't have any control over the budget but I am hoping we will make the military a priority even though we are at semi peacetime. Right now we might have the strongest military in the world but it would not hurt if we definitely had the strongest.

At one point, one runs completely out of cheeks to turn and when you ware out the high road, sometimes it time to dish back what being served.

Fact, change is coming, by any means nessary.

The media and press is now owned by 6 conglomerates of global super rich and global corporations. The "free and independent press" no longer exists, which of course applies to TV news, Internet news and the Internet giants. What they put out is not "news," it is global corporate propaganda. The "lowering of standards" and extremism is 24/7 on TV, the Internet and the news promoted as propaganda - and people buy into it.

The election did prove that Republicans are more independently minded. MASSIVE effort was made first to ram Jeb Bush down Republican's throats - and then any other establishment candidate and finally ABT - Anyone But Trump. Bush was SLAUGHTERED by Republican primary voters and in defiance nominated Trump.

To the contrary, while FEW Democrats liked Hilary - something I often pointed out that no Democrats were starting threads praising Clinton - the Global Corporate propaganda machinery (MSM) combined with internal Democratic Party corruption did successfully ram Hilary Clinton down Democrat's throats.

Now, in absolute unlimited corporate and super rich furious rage for not having picked the president THIS time, there is non-stop diversion for any news favorable to Trump and rabid, incessant, any lie or triviality they can think of attack Trump. They literally attacked him for having 2 scoops of ice cream. The attack now over the phone call to a Gold Star mother? EVERY parent of a child in the military ALL say the phone call as reported was just fine - even pointing out the Democrat Congresswoman used the EXACT same explanation concerning the death of two FBI agents. Yet the ranting goes on - all to divert from the Hollywood sex scandal and moreso MASSIVE success we are FINALLY having against ISIS.

THE SOURCE of the extremism is the international corporate and super rich propaganda outlets that still falsely call themselves the free and independent media and press. Is is as simple as constantly ranting that more American dollars should go to Mexico - because the wealthy person on earth is a Mexican who owns a huge chuck of the USA press - nor will we ever hear any criticism of Saudi Arabia because they are major stockholders in the USA media and press. Google, the most racist and sexist employer in the USA? You'll never hear a word of it. It is ALL propaganda and diversion to keep us American peasants bickering over trivialities - now literally ranting back and forth over nothing but word choices.

Who do the next 8 biggest spenders call when they need protection?

Your argument is not valid. If 8 people live under a bridge, are you expected to live there with them?
