More harrassment of Spanish speakers

The Constitution is written in English, every law, every ruling, every official decision in this country is in English. People who live here and don't learn and use the language give the impression they don't respect our entire system. If they are not citizens they should just go back to where they came from...

My parents always spoke italian to each other even though they learned fluent english. I agree if you move to another country you should learn the language but this is going a little overboard. Its not like tjey auditioned for a sports commentator job and showed up to the interview speaking spanish..this is 2 people shopping and shooting the breeze

Yes, there is a standard language, but it isn't official.

There is nothing wrong with people who live here to speak their native language when in the presence of their friends and family if that conversation has no relevance to other people around them. If I decide to speak German with my Mom in Wal-Mart to ask her about what chocolate to choose, I'm not being at all disrespectful to anybody else present. Your viewpoint is silly.

 

I have no Russian spellchecker -- thus on half the forums I post I make grammer mistakes.

 

We also speak Russian at home.

 

I can cuss in Russian in public places -- no one understands anyway.

 

In the U.S., we are not bound together by religion. One of the few things that link us together is the English language. It should be declared our national language. Without that link, were as Balkanized as Eastern Europe.

Having said that, it's very petty to harass people you don't know who are speaking Spanish and minding their own business.

The problem is the loco extremes that some on the fringe right take the definition of "assimilate" -- such as taking it to mean that they should throw a snowflake hissy fit if they so much as overhear two people speaking in another language. That's a special level of triggered.

 

There are always going to be those fringe lunatics who roll around on their motorized carts telling Mexicans to start speaking English.

Personally, I wouldn't touch that one with a ten foot pole, or you can end up looking like Lucy getting cussed out by Ricky.

 

And a few weeks ago a fast food worker was fired for refusing to serve anyone who didn't speak Spanish......so what?

 

You honestly shouldn't even be allowed to be a citizen if you can't speak English. Would be so much easier to deport them all if that were the rules.
