Germany invaded France, France was our ally. We came to the aid of France. Germany was not "defending themselves" when we came to the aid of France.

Eisenhower was the hero of my country when I was a lad. He was maybe the last politician that didn't create animosity within my family. Eisenhower was everything right with the world. Looking back, probably the happiest 8-10 years of my life. Then Kennedy happened and all hell broke lose.

I was a high school kid during the Ike presidency and can report that Ike was hated by my family of Democrats. We liked him as a General but not as the president.
