The Labour peer recalled an early meeting with Putin, who became Russian president in 2000. “Putin said: ‘When are you going to invite us to join Nato?’ And [Robertson] said: ‘Well, we don’t invite people to join Nato, they apply to join Nato.’ And he said: ‘Well, we’re not standing in line with a lot of countries that don’t matter.’”

Doesn't sound to me like Putin was serious about it. He could have applied to join. He never did.

As I said, the veracity of the facts about the obstacles placed for Putin's bid to join NATO are in dispute. I can bore you with the actual history, facts and reports at the time, but ultimately Russia is the raison d'etre of NATO. Russia joining NATO is like Iran saying it wants to join the International Maritime Security Construct whose real objective is to contain Iran.

How is applying to join something an 'obstacle'? What a bizarre perspective.

The biggest obstacle to Russia joining NATO was that Russia wasn't interested in being bound by anyone else's rules. I would have thought that was about as obvious as an obvious thing could be. Putin was, as he so often did, trolling people. He was also leaving room for himself & apologists in the future to shift responsibility for Russia's behaviour to others.

I have no interest to drag this issue further: Russia joining NATO was more fanciful and less something to be taken seriously (except to reveal something else) than the Netanyahu-Putin-Trump alliance which I knew would be shot down eventually, even if it was a lot more dangerous to Iran than a NATO alliance with few credible adversaries on Europe's gateways. Put differently: you win: Putin really bad, bad -- the only place he can look to for friends are other "bad, worse, bad" countries, Iran one of them:) The sooner the Russians get that message, the better for everyone:)

So your saying that if Russia joined NATO, thereby extending the organizations borders across the entire continent of Europe to the Pacific Ocean there are no/nil/zero potentially hostile States from which NATO members (including Russia) might potentially have to protect themselves?

Forgive me if my geography is slightly off on this point but as memory serves there's a rather large country (name beginning with C) that shares a border with Russia. I realize their current leader is peace living hippy  but isn't there the slightest chance it might represent a threat in the future?

Volunteers from russia of non-Slavic ethnicity fighting on Ukrainian side are making YouTube videos calling on their ethnic groups to rise up against russian rule.
They are saying most of Russian fighting force is tied up in Ukraine and Russian military is weak. Putin better get out of Ukraine before it’s too late.

So you are offended by Ukrain setting up artillary in urban areas.
WILL YOU BE OFFENDED WHEN RUSSIA BEGINS SHELLING, BOMBING AND STRAFFING THESE SAME URBAN AREAS?
WILL YOU BE OFFENDED WHEN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS ARE SHOT, GASSED AND STARVED TO DEATH?

Yes, everyone already knows this. The USA is the leading cause of death. And the herd of Ukrainian radicals is just a group of stupid people who believed in anti-Russian propaganda and are now doing evil. For which they will be punished.

Hundreds of thousands were shot and bombed by UKRANIAN ARMY and NAZISTS.
Ukranian Neo-Nazists are starving people now and shoot them for trying to evacuate.
While in the liberated cities Russia delivers humanitarian aid. Pro-Ukrainian and pro-European propaganda does not talk about this, of course.
And I don't offended. I just waiting a moment when the last Nazi will be burned and ukranian civilians will be saved by Russian troops.

Millions of Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries, fearful of Russian thermobaric weapons, bombs, mortars,
artillary, snipers, missiles and tank shells.

    UKRAINE HAS NOT INVADED RUSSIA.
    RUSSIA HAS INVADED UKRAINE.

Russia seeking to ally itself with NATO is like the KKK seeking to ally itself with the NAACP. Or a NAZI seeking to join the Anti Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. Or an astronaut seeking membership in the Flat Earth Society.

It sounds bad when you frame it like that. What about if you include the fact that you can get 15 years in prison if you work for the enemies of your own state? If you knowingly promote the agenda of the country that is your arch enemy. How has the USA dealt with so called Russian collusion? The freedom of speech and expression went down the drain. Don't be a hypocrite.

I do agree. That's why your lot justifies killing 500,000+ Iraqi children as something normal. Let me tell you something, it's not normal.

The totally debunked Russian Collusion Delusion is still hiding around some folks minds? Amazing... but I guess there are still some wackos that think the "South Will Rise Again" too.

Have you spent even 5 minutes reading this forum? There are Americans on here who cheer harder for Putin than his own family, and not just one or two. Its a whole demographic. They seem pretty free to me. Tucker Carlson, perhaps the highest profile figure in conservative media, has strongly expressed his support for Putin as recently as last week. Again, tip of an iceberg.

'Knowingly promoting the agensa of the country that is your arch enemy' is a growth industry in America right now. I guess its harder to see when you agree wiht the people doing it.

This forum does not influence the public opinion. Try discussing serious topics on twitter, facebook, etc...If you don't follow the official line (whoever decides what that line might be), you will be excluded. Automatically.

Tucker doesn't support Putin...LOL. He doesn't want to see American soldiers in Ukraine... but that's far from supporting Putin. He spends half his time championing the effort to end US importation of Russian oil because it funds Putin's aggression. Tucker in no way supports Putin.

Zelensky champions the conflict to take back the eastern provinces of Ukraine from Russian settlers. Many of these
settlers arrived after Stalin starved millions of Ukrainians to death.
If Putin supports a breakaway province of Russians here in Australia I will happily take up the fight - just like Zelensky.

Sputnik: DPR Head: Some 200 People Buried Under Rubble as Azov Militants Set Off Explosive Device in Mariupol

This comes just minutes before the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol was about to begin in accordance with an agreement reached between Moscow and Kiev during talks earlier this week.
Ukrainian militants from the "Azov" battalion set off an explosive device on Meotida Boulevard in Mariupol which has resulted in up to 200 people, including women and children who were hiding in the basement, being buried under the rubble, the head of the Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushilin said.
