I would imagine a lot of Americans will be dismissive because they might see American human beings as different to human beings in the UK.

Like someone already said, 99% of American gun owners have proven their mettle. What is your proof in never having met the challenge? Yes you have less violence. Nobody has claimed to have been attacked "by a roving gang of 45 lunatics" but the fact that there are many legitimate acts of self defense with a firearm

The firearms you are attempting to describe are used by Americans to defend themselves every day.

I am over 70 years old and can think of 3 instances in which having a gun saved me from individuals who were not intent on making me any healthier, wealthier or happier.

No sane person goes trolling rough neighborhoods hoping to encounter violent criminals but when violent criminals happen to chose you, your choices are limited and none of them are good.

In 1980, the only house I could afford to buy was in an inner city neighborhood with a fairly high crime rate but was only 4 blocks from my blacksmith shop.

I lived there for over 20 years and can think of 3 times that I had to deploy a firearm to repel armed predators.
Unfortunately, one night I found my friend and upstairs neighbor murdered with a hatchet and the case remains open.

Soon after that, the next door neighbors had their phone lines cut (pre cell phone era) by home invaders I was able to deter.

It's also a mistake to think that firearms are only for killing since over 19 million Americans engage in some form of target shooting.(1)
This includes a surprising number of women who are attracted to the competitive shooting sports(2) and progress on to the Olympic level.

Finally, it is regrettable that when people think of a gun they only think of school shootings when, for so long so many schools had rifle teams as part of the sports program and the Boy Scouts required rifle proficiency.

It its only my opinion that there's no point in demonizing an inanimate object when it's human behavior that deserves our attention.

I never said there wasn't legitimate self defense issues. Those self defense issues can be addressed with a pistol or a shotgun. No need for a semi automatic rifle.

first off it’s the best home defense weapon you can buy. The AR is amazing at shorter barrel lengths and frangible rounds. It’s the best room clearing solution.

I misspoke, yes people have openly carried it but it’s typically for a demonstration. Just because you CAN carry one around doesn’t make it a good idea. I won’t call them stupid, I’ll just say it’s not my tactical choice. Who knows, maybe that guy in the last pic is a former service member.

Trustworthiness. 99+% of one hundred million law abiding American gun owners have proven themselves trustworthy. Without the right to keep and bear arms, this couldn't be known or proven. No character would be built or improved. All liberties are that way. You can't compare US gun deaths to England gun deaths if England doesn't have the gun liberty equal to US gun liberty. If less than one percent of our ships sink and more than 99 percent are proven sea worthy. You can't say that your own ships don't sink if none of them have ever set to sea or met a wave. Not to mention the dearth of seamanship skills from floating a rubber ducky in a tub. Pretended character is no character at all. Two hundred and fifty years ago, America didn't request independence from the English King and Church. We declared it.
