The requested F-16s were approved back in August. They won't be useful until Ukraine has the infrastructure in place to launch and maintain them. But even then, fighter jets arent exactly meant for this sort of warfare. They are good for attacking behind enemy lines, but they don't help much with breaking enemy lines, and thats what Ukraine needs to do if they want to kick Russia out. Russia's defensive positions include vast anti-air emplacements. And so do Ukraine's, which is why Russia has been holding the bulk of its air power in reserve. Both sides are essentially just sitting on their airpower, waiting to knock the other's out of their air, knowing that there isn't a whole lot that air power can accomplish in a slow, grinding war of ground attrition. Fighters are useful in fast wars, spread out wars, wars over water, wars that encompass a large area... but they don't help a lot in dense trench warfare. Not unless Ukraine has some revoltuionary air strategy up their sleeve. But the F-16s are on their way, so I guess we'll see...

I was curious what the reaction to this defeat was going to be.

Looks like quite a lot of Ukrainian territory has already been ceded.

Both qualitatively and quantitatively, yes, we can send a helluva lot more than we have already. We presently lack merely the voluntary industrial output and the congressional will to do it.

Add it up. It comes to €222.7 billion. Converted to USD it comes to $239,785,974,000.

Also, the EU just approved €50 billion in fresh aid to Ukraine, which pushes the amount to over a quarter trillion.

EU agrees 50 bln euro Ukraine aid package - what are the reactions?

Yup! And as soon as those Nazis are done chopping up those Russian freedom fighters we are going to do more than that by putting Ukraine into NATO and then sending troops over there to join in the fun the next time a single Russian POS crosses the border.

Sucks to be the ghosts of your grandfathers!

Holy cocka doodle doo Zoomer. where are you getting these ridiculous numbers from ? Ukraine is retreating and on the Run.. losing as much as 20-1 as things go in a rout. The main front in the wear .. the majority of the remaining Ukraine troops trying to defend .. was encircled Zoomer ..

Surely you have to have some conception of what a military disaster this is .. being outgunned by the enemy 10-1, Control of the Skies dropping 60 big Bombs a day .. firing 10-20,000 artillery shells a day .. Ukraine low on artillery only able to manage 1000 in return .. the casualty and kill ration reflecting this vast disproportion.

And then -- getting encircled .. last supply line cut off .. or rather .. turned into a gauntlet with the enemy 300 meters away on both sides.

ridiculous amounts of money .. on a completely lost cause .. Russia doing better not worse on the economic front .. the sanctions an unmitigated disaster .. blowing the Nord .. totally backfired .. as is what happens when you don't have everyone in on sanctions .. they only work if everyone plays along.. now -- thanks hitting the economic nuclear option button for the second time (Trump being the First) .. we will have some competition to the US dollar for international transactions in the near future .. at a time when our Debt is an unmitigated mess .. Disaster
Denial of some form .. Military summary channel and pods spoke of encirclement and a need to retreat from Avdiivka posted a few days prior to the official announcement .. at that time was stated "Kremlin Propaganda" .. and those posting were Russian operatives. Now that the information turned out to be True .. thus was not propaganda of any kind .. never mind from Kremlin .. .. don't think we will be getting much grudging acceptance.

That's...pretty sick. A peace deal should have been made ages ago. There will be no taking back of the land the Russians have taken, and all Ukraine has accomplished is to kill off hundreds of thousands on both sides.
IT would be nice if the territory could be retaken, but leaders should know when to compromise rather than send more bodies to the meatgrinder.

The poster's comments on praising a high death toll are the result of tribal hatreds that the US should have no part in, let alone fund.

Talk about a combobulation of a dogs breakfast....gifty.

Wow....some pyrhhic "victory" 130 days later and 120K dead orcs later....for some insignificant town of 10000....but hey....orcs have large ribbon cutting ceremonies just for filling potholes in the spring....simple minded creatures.

Another SU34 gone down in flames today....possibly another..."mysteriously" ....can't keep this up forever...gifty....against little to no Air Force....that's like 400 jets already.

U AF thwarts the orcs in Zaporizia...lotsa dead stiffs and hardware for the orcs...another 1100 today....

France is sending killer drones shortly.....lotsa them....not great if you're a Orc grunt in a frozen mudhole.

    "Pretty sick"?

Sure....wars are ugly....but the other side started it....they'll have to live with the consequences of another breakup down the road.

When you pray for rain....you need to be prepared for the mud after also.

And hundreds of thousands of families will have to live with the consequences. Such a waste.

This situation is a healthy reminder that winning a particular battle is not necessarily the same thing as winning the war.

The Spartans and other Greek defenders famously lost at Thermopylae after inflicting heavy losses on the Persians, but the Greeks ultimately won that war, and it was thanks in part to the sacrifice they made there.

And there, too, free people were fighting off an invading empire.

indeed....and actually a pretty bloody meaningless Russian achievement other than the capture of a few square Km of now totally flattened rubble...it's only value is within the realms of fantasy inhabited by Putin and his own little inner circle and the up coming re-election victory speech!!
But my lord....did it soak up a f**king shed load of Russian equipment and men though....well done Vlad....on gaining nothing much!!!???

But he remains the master strategist.....:D
