Mike Johnson and Donald Trump to promote bill to prevent non-citizens from voting

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will promote a bill with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence aimed at preventing non-citizens from voting.

Johnson will hold a joint press conference with Trump on Friday at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence, where the top House Republican will tout the legislation to “elevate the issue of non-citizens voting in federal elections,” according to a person familiar with the planning.

The event is also an effort to rally Republican lawmakers to "get on the team," on the issue of election security, the person said.

However, non-citizens are already not allowed to vote in federal elections in the United States, and it's not a common occurrence. No state currently allows non-citizens to cast a ballot in state-level elections either, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center, though some municipalities may have their own rules for local races.

Why talk about a bill intended to fix something that ain't broke? To help convince the hmmmmmmmmm, shall we say easily persuaded, it needs fixin'. After all, His Orangeness would have won the popular vote both times if not for all those immigrants illegally voting for Hillary and Joe, right?

I view it a bit more cynically. I think most high-level republicans know it's bullshit (Trump may be an exception due to his extreme narcissism). So the actual purpose of so-called election security is to make it harder to vote in general, and to intimidate voters who are generally hostile to them. Just due to demographics that tend to support republicans, the harder it is to vote, the more republicans benefit. So election security calls both rally the gullible base, as well as reduce legal voting by opponents, so I see why they think it's a winning issue for them. But I just find it disgusting.

Some states want to allow non-citizens to vote. This bill would proactively prevent that.

At one time only white land owners could vote. Now the dems want foreigners to vote in our elections. We've come a long way. Maybe too far.

I think it’s a play to the mexihate crowd.

Recall that Trump ba ked the coup that brought down Kevin McCarthy in order to prevent thevGOP Congress from voting on a conservative immigration bill.

Also recall that Trump made no secret of the fact that he wanted the bill stopped because he wanted immigration as a campaign issue.

This is far from the first time that Trump, and the GOP in general, noisily championed meaningless bills and orders designed to do nothing other than trigger their political base.

It’s a pointless idea, that means nothing.

But just watch the tight wing noise machine promote it!

We've been kicking this one around for a really long time. Voting by illegals has been on the wishlist for democrats so they can buy enough votes to cling to power. Having a federal bill in place to prevent states and localities from allowing illegal immigrants from voting seems sensible. Why would democrats want to continue to disenfranchise actual citizens?

While undoubtedly infrequent, it does happen, and with the current massive influx of illegals, the potential problem gets bigger by the day. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I am sure far more of this exists than has been discovered, and when millions of illegal immigrants are coming here yearly, the potential for this problem to become significant grows accordingly.

Which states? If they "want to", is there proposed legislation? If it's already against the law, states can't do it anyway, right?

Lower voter turnout and voter suppression have been part of the POT's election playbook for decades.

Not at all the case. I've looked into this first hand. Election security is EXTREMELY vulnerable. 2020 was rife with fraudulent voting. Illegals voting in 2020 wasn't the issue. Stuffing ballot boxes was the issue. Voter fraud in 2020 was so rampant as to make the outcome highly suspect. Securing the voting process back to what is was should be EVERY Americans #1 concern.

You have illustrated perfectly why Trump continues to drive the voter fraud narrative without a shred of evidence. It's important to his goals that elections be de-legitimized in order to explain away his consecutive popular vote losses.

My assumption was that you asked because you are trying to establish that this is not really a problem, and my reply was directed specifically at that notion.

If you are being sincere and honestly asking your question, my guess would be none because it is not legal for a non citizen to vote. As I have already alluded to, this does not mean that there is not a legitimate concern with illegals voting because despite its illegality, it does happen, and likely far more than we know about, especially in states with motor voter registration.

But there are folks in this thread implying that Dems are trying to allow illegals to vote in federal elections. I am not aware of any bills having been introduced and seems you're also not aware of any. If anyone is aware of any such bills please speak up.

Not if the states say other wise as the feds have no current enforcement mechanism. CA already allows them to vote in local elections,

Which party is openly inviting illegals in by the millions, so they can pick up house seats after the next census? Some have kids and wham, citizens. Can't kick them out anymore. Those poor poor helpless illegal dreamers!! And this country is all many of them know. They came in "illegally", but it would be so wrong to kick them out, so lets give them citizenship instead. WE SEE what's going on. You'd have to be blind.

My guess would be that illegal immigrants as a whole would vote in large margins for Democrats if they were voting. I dont think I'm going out on a limb for that assumption.

With that being the case, I have no doubt that Democrats have no problem with it being easy for illegals to get on voting rolls knowing full well that some will vote. This doesn't mean that Democrats are passing legislation for it to happen, because that is obviously illegal, but it does mean that they are likely more than content to allow this loophole to exist with motor voter registration and the like.

In that sense, "allowing illegals to vote" doesn't have to mean passing legislation, it can also mean doing nothing to stop it from happening.

Why do you assume it's easy for illegals to get on voting rolls? Do you have data showing how many illegals are currently on voter rolls?

The big question is why would the democrats oppose such a bill? (We already know the answer)

First, I'm Libertarian. Second, have you actually looked into it or are you just spouting inane nonsense generated by your confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance? I have looked into it. Extensively!!! And there is NO DOUBT voting fraud was rampant. So rampant we will never know the full extent of it. But we know it occurred at unprecedented levels. Why are you so nonchalant about fixing vulnerabilities in the vote? Implies you know the voting process has been subverted and believe you benefit. You don't.

Once we lose control of the vote, they won't give a damn how you or anyone else votes. You act flippant now, but things have a way of turning South once they know they don't answer to the People. You think it's great now because Biden is "your guy". The next guy they put in may not meet with your approval and once they have control it will be too late for you to object.
