The South Vietnamese Army won the war. In 1972 at Easter time the North Vietnamese army attacked the south and were defeated by the South Vietnamese Army. No US troops were involved in the fighting on the ground. In fact 500,000 US troops been withdrawn starting after Tet in 1968. The US provided logistical and air power. The war was over. All the US had to do was continue military aid and air and logistics as they did in Korea. Instead US politicians pulled the plug whilst Soviet and Red China stepped up support for the communist north. This lead to the inevitable but completely avoidable fall of the south in 1975.
