That seems about right, given the types of responses I see on this forum from the Europeans...heh!

You know 'mental illness' could be something like OCD, feeling commpelled to push in chairs or whatever. It's not like their metally disabled. Mental illness covers a spectrum of problems, with many of them mundane and unnoticeable in everyday life. This is coming from an older brother of a child with ADHD and an American. To blame all of Europe's problems on mental illnesses strikes me as a bit racist.

It is better to be crazy and know it, than to be sane and have doubts

I would wager a guess that Europeans also are more vigilant about diagnosing mental illnesses. In America, there is relatively little effort or funding put towards mental health.

Which is unfortunate, because mental health drives a lot of people's physical health.

That's all? Man I would have guessed it was somewhere about 90 percent judging by most of the posters on this forum.

You just make things up as you go along, don't you? You have no link to support what you just said. You just throw crap against the wall and hope it sticks.

    You were saying?.......

One-quarter of all Americans met the criteria for having a mental illness within the past year, and fully a quarter of those had a "serious" disorder that significantly disrupted their ability to function day to day, according to the largest and most detailed survey of the nation's mental health, published yesterday.

Although parallel studies in 27 other countries are not yet complete, the new numbers suggest that the United States is poised to rank No. 1 globally for mental illness, researchers said.

The survey focused on four major categories of mental illness: anxiety disorders (such as panic and post-traumatic stress disorders); mood disorders (such as major depression and bipolar disease); impulse control disorders (such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder); and substance abuse.

Almost half of Americans meet the criteria for such an illness at some point in their lives, the survey found.

Mental illness is very common amongst humans - whatever country they may live in

Since the USA has very poor heath services compared to the rest of the developed world - I would say that is a reasonable assumption by Serfin USA

The prescription rate for anti-depresants is surely higher in the US? I work in the industry and the US is the target for these drugs as the market is huge and the prices significantly higher.

Plus, dimesia, while being a mental illness is age related.

Pots and kettles there. Who are the idiots? The ones that started the 2 World Wars? Or the ones that ran in from the other side of the world to join in the fun?

mental illness is primarily a western disease. Many less aflluent societies have such a low incidence of mental illness that they dont recognise or diagnose it as such.

Yes, I was thinking about this too -- but more in the sense to see the study as an excuse to spend more money on it...

Medicines in the USA are always way more expensive than here at home, e.g. I need to use a cream that costs around €20 (which I think is already pricey) but in the USA it costs a whopping $200/tube. The manufactuerer is European, btw.

At the bright side: Americans, via a detour, are sponsering our healthcare!

According to the study two of my family members would be "mentally ill".

My little sister takes Relatine not 'cuz she has ADHD but to concentrate better, or whatever. My brother, though, is a mental case: he has been on "sick leave" for about a year now (and he now is only on 60% of his salary), he takes medicines, goes to theraphy, etc...

Maybe that's because the drug companies who come up with treatments for fairly normal behaviour know that the doctors/patients in those countries can't afford their product..so don't bother pushing them.

“It became necessary in the 1970s,” wrote a past President of the APA, “to facilitate diagnostic agreement among clinicians, scientists, and regulatory authorities given the need to match patients with newly emerging pharmacologic treatments.”

So mental illness is driven more by pharm profits than any real increase in mental illness.

Shyness is a "Social Anxiety Disorder" treatable forever by SSRIs? Really?

Intermittent Explosive Disorder is treatable by SSRIs as well,.. so getting really angry is no longer a behaviour choice by an individual........but an illness which removes all responsibility for your own actions. Sheesh!

Would you believe that "Oppositional Defiance Disorder" simply means recurrent pattern of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that persists for at least 6 months Guess there are hundreds of thousands of mentally ill teens out there in the world then?

In fact, most of the newer "mental disorders" are behaviour choices rather than as a result of anything pathological......which allows psychiatrists to do expensive "behaviour therapies" until such time as the drug companies come up with their next wonder treatment.

Let's face it......we are all mentally ill if you are going to go by the DSM....it's just that our doctors haven't told us yet that our behaviours are not all "normal"!
